Literally my whole family one at a time has been getting the flu starting with me. I’ve taken a week off of work and just when I was about to go back today, my son came down with something and I need to stay home with him. My boss is so upset but I really don’t have another option! I’m a teacher so I send in work for the kids and I’m not getting paid for these days. I understand it’s so frustrating for her to find replacements but am I so crazy for taking off because of the flu?

One of the many things I’ve come to hate about teaching. She would prefer you come in and get the whole school sick? Or that you leave a sick kid by themself?

I know it’s starting to drive me crazy too🙈
There’s so much pressure for teachers to come in while sick and now look what happens, literally half the teaching staff is out with the same thing! And my kid is in the school so now I should send him and expose his whole class?
It really makes me so upset about how passive aggressive she gets about it but I guess I have to remind myself I’m doing the right thing.

I used to work in a gan and one of the things that contributed to me burning out was how big a deal it was if I was out sick. I was single, so I was only taking off days for myself, so it really wasn't so often, but I'm sorry, if I was up at 3 am puking and then need to walk around with a bucket in the morning I'm not going to come in. I know it's last minute, because up until I threw up I was still planning on coming in even though I already didn't feel well.
I once came in and sat on the floor dizzy before the kids got there trying to figure out if I needed to leave. Because I was already there I stayed but I needed my coworkers to give me all the easiest jobs that day, and I really should have been home resting.

I don't think this issue is unique to teachers its relevant to anyone who works with other people (can't be remote) and is depended on and there is limited coverage.
It stinks but it's part of being an adult and working. Do what you need to do and don't feel guilty.

No guilt. Zero. Nada.
You can feel sad or bad but not guilty.

You don’t hav to do anything you don’t want to do.
After a week off, in any job, the boss has a right to be upset even if it is totally out of your hands. And hers. She can still be upset because you’re not doing the job she hired you for.
Personally I would ask my husband to take some time off or find someone, anyone, who can atleast watch my child part of the day so I could do some time in work.
I have very few sick days so yeah, I get it. It’s rough.

Can your husband take off? He should take a few shifts with sick kids.
Your boss has a right to be upset. But there isn't anything you can do about it if you are sick.
This is the same with any in person job, especially in the helping professions where we are in direct contact with others. I had covid recently and was knocked out hard for a week. Yeah he was frustrated but I couldn't come in.
Both things can be true. You are sick and can't come in AND he has the right to be frustrated.
