potato knish kugel
from Pobody'er Nerfect
so good it deserves its own thread !
5-6 potatoes 1 medium onion (you can use leftover pareve mashed potatoes for this)
1 medium onion
1/2 c oil
3 eggs + egg for brushing
1 c flour
1 tso salt
sesame seeds
Peel potatoes, cut into chunks and boil until soft, mash & let cool.
Dice onion and fry in a bit of the oil, let cool & mix all the ingredients together and spread into a greased 9x13.
Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with seeds. Bake at 350 for about an hour or more, until done.

Yes it does. It is also called "Doughless Potato Knish" and I got the recipe from a very old thread here years ago.

I would like to try this for shabbos. Do you think its better to make individual knishes or just like a kugel and then cut onto squares

I usually make a large one and cut into squares or slices when serving; or sometimes in a casserole dish and everyone spoons out a portion.

Does it taste OK heated up on the plata on Shabbat or is it only good for Friday night? Anyone know?

I made this for Shabbat. It was very good - a nice change from my regular, grated potato kugel.
I baked it in an 8 x 11 pan. I will definitely make it again.
Thanks!

Editing to say that you can use leftover pareve mashed potatoes for this. I made mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving with sauteed onion, then used the leftovers for this.

Thanks. I read this and immediately went to make it from my leftover Shabbos mashed potatoes, to send to my daughter who just had a baby!

Thanks! | Just curious what your method is for warming it up on the plata.

Can I ask if it heats through in time for the meal, and if the bottom burns at all from the plata?
