Did you hear about the new rules? No liquid and no cell phones. (Aside for formula). Has anyone flown recently? We will be soon and I'm wondering if it takes forever at checkpoints now.

This is from my travel agent's newsletter I received Friday:

For now only British Airways has made the most drastic restrictions to hand luggage:

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK or United States of America airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Note:
Passengers are advised that ALL electrical or battery powered items including laptops, mobile phones, portable music players, remote controls etc cannot be carried in the cabin and must be checked in as hold baggage.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:-

*pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags));
*travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
*prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
*spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
*contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
*for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
*female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
*tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
*keys (but no electrical key fobs)

Every other item must be carried in customer’s hold luggage.

U.S Airlines are banning all liquids in carry on baggage.

El Al has not made any changes whatsoever in their policy; and European airlines have also not announced any changes. To be on the safe side, avoid taking liquids or gels in your carryon for the near term.

Does anyone know whether flights not originating in UK are allowing Tefillin bags to be carried on board?

They had some kind of gel that when mixed with a sport drink and then "activated" with a cellphone would turn explosive. So no shampoos & hair gels and lotion (because of the explosive gel), no drinks (because it had to be mixed with that gel), and no cell phones or electronics (because it could activate the mixture). Scary!

It doesn't look like they allow tefillin bags. Crying This could be a real problem on long flights. No food either, so better hope your kosher meal turns up!!! (with a hechsher you eat!)

The worst thing is is that you can't bring books. I hope they lift these restrictions before I travel next, because I don't think I could survive an 8 hour flight with nothing to read. Sad Sad

My b-I-l and wife is flying tomorrow, we will see how they manage.

Most of those restrictions are just on flights originating in the UK. On US flights the ban in mostly on liquids. You can still bring carry on items on the plane. I just came back fron a week in Vegas and I brought a carry on duffel on the flight with cell phone and mp3 player, book etc. The TSA was concentrating on liquids and gels.

Right, a flight from the UK to the US (or reverse) shouldn't be that long that it's really a crisis (as long as your food turns up). I guess if you really are worried, you could fly to elsewhere in Europe, then on to the US, though the extra time and money might be a burden. Pikuach nefesh, especially on behalf of a large group of people, should come in to play if you have to take the flight to/from US/UK and can't time it so that shacharis is davenned before or after the flight (and baggage check), but I guess you'd have to ask a shailoh. Long flights elsewhere don't have all these same restrictions, so you can bring siddurs, tefillin, books, etc. along.

A Message from Rabbi Hershi Vogel - Chaplain at Heathrow Airport.
Good News!

As of 4:30 am Tuesday, 15 August, Jewish passengers are allowed to take
their Tallis and Tefillin with them on the plane provided they are in a clear
plastic bag and not in the velvet pouches. This is a special concession that he
has arranged and must be respected.

If he could be of any assistance e-mail Hvoge@... or call on 07970 829
758.

They seem to have lifted most restrictions. Just no liquids, gels etc, and limited size to hand luggage.

I just flew yesterday and didnt have any problems. Yes the lines were long but they werent so strict with liquids! We had a stopover and we told the second flight that we have water for the baby that they gave us on the flight before and they were totally fine. Even better, when we came there were big lines and we were looking where to go when a man (airport worker) came up to us and said hell help us so he came inside with us and looked around to see what the best line would be for us. This was 2 hours before our flight was supposed to take off. He then took us to the red carpet and we didnt have to wait on any lines!!!!! We still cant figure out why he chose us. Then he told us after that we should pray for him cuz we believe in god!!! and they didnt even check majorly our bags. They just put it through the machine and thats it. Maybe cuz we had a baby with us they figured we are not blowing up any planes! But it scary to think they would be nice to someone who is really out to kill!!!

I was just on jetblue flting from miami to new york. They dont allow any lotion, lipstick, creams, liquids.... Before I got on to the plane they were checking through everyones carry-on pieces. So many people had to throw away lipsticks, perfume, lotion. I even had to spill out my babies sippy cup wiht water- but they gave me water for her as soon as I got ont he plane.
WHile we were flyin I was watching the news (jetblue has t.v's) and they said part of the plot to blow up the planes included a husband, wife wiht their baby. THey were going to use their baby as to get passed and then blow them all up. How sick is this world???!?!?!?!?

Wow, just earlier today I said watch some Arab use their baby as a way to get on the plane with liquids to blow up the plane! Omg, I cant believe they actually tried that. INSANE!

How did they catch that sick family? I thought the whole point of no liquids was because they couldnt differentiate b/w reg. liquids and the liquids used to make bombs.

So, I guess I should be scared to fly after all... Yikes. I'll say lots of Tehillim.

The British are feeling the pinch in relation to recent bombings and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved'. Soon though,
security levels may be raised yet again to Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross".
Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies all but ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorised from
"Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance". The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher levels in France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate". The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively
paralysing the country's military capability.

It's not only the English and French that are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the
alert level from "shout loudly and excitedly" to "elaborate military posturing". Two more levels remain, "ineffective combat operations" and
"change sides". The Germans also increased their alert state from "disdainful arrogance" to "dress in uniform and sing marching songs". They have two higher levels: "invade a neighbour" and "lose".
