I agree with dancing queen- I could maybe see how a skirt that is literally sweeping the floor and picking up dirt is not refined, but what's wrong with a skirt that hits the ankle?

Separate question- what swimming pools in Israel allow you to wear non-bathing clothes in the water? I thought they all had a rule against regular clothing!

Really? I think it depends on the group you're swimming with. I've been swimming in a bathing suit for the past five years, with several friends and strangers who have done the same. There were always one or two with dresses, but the majority was in bathing suits.

I agree it depends on your circles. From what I gather, your circles are more modern than mine although my background is more modern than yours.

I could never bring myself to wear a schvimklide. (My daughter asked for and received them. Kids don't want to be different.)

Clothing restrictions chafe the hardest when they interfere with my exercise. I don't feel any difference between wearing a halter top suit or a strap suit. Whether one looks better in me than not in front of anyone who is not DH doesn't matter to me. Whether my skirt is midi or maxi is also immaterial to me. What bothers me is when my movement is restricted or imperiled.

And I think the use of the word ridiculous is ridiculous. Cool Isn't there a better way to say what you mean? Use feelings even.
I'm
(Just enjoying going OT with you for a moment.)

Did you just insert "I'm" at the beginning of my incomplete sentence? I reserve the right to artistic expression.
I'm lol!!

Omg! This is hard to believe but I have no idea how that happened!! Lol! Maybe my spell-check?

And OP, sorry for the mini hijack but since I posted here a couple of times without trying to help you, here is my two cents:

I'm assuming you wanted to join ChareidiTown because you think there's something you can connect to there, but it's not necessarily the clothing restrictions. I believe you can follow rules and also use your own judgement. You can wear lipstick in a shade that doesn't scream "FACE PAINT!!". You can wear a tsniusdig skirt even if there aren't 490 people matching you. Where I come from a halter one-piece swimsuit is fine (really anything that isn't drastically cut out in front) but for that particular nuance, I would come with a tee and check out what other people are wearing at the pool before taking off my tee.

Good luck and don't go crazy trying to fit in. HaSh-m's opinion matters most.

You'll get familiar with the word rchuvi (רחובי) I've heard that way too many times in my Bais Yaakov school.

I had a teacher who didn't really belong at MO school who used to use the phrase "the street" a lot as if it was something bad. As the street was how I got to and from the school, I ignored her.

OP, you're in culture shock right now. Don't worry, the feeling should fade with time. You'll figure out what you have in your closet that you can keep, and what needs to get donated.

Make a friend with someone in the community, and ask her to come over and help you out. Let her remake your wardrobe, and then ask her to go shopping with you to buy some pieces that the locals wear. That will help you a lot, because you can mix and match the local stuff with the clothes you brought with you, and it will make you blend better.

Most importantly, I hope you find what you're looking for in your new community! I'm impressed that you want to be at that level. I could never do it, I'm way too much of an individualist.
