He always met his milestones on time but is late to walk and also when I ask him questions doesn’t answer properly/doesn’t understand I’m asking a question. He is 13 months. Should I take him to a specialist? |
How can he be late to walk if average for walking is 14 months ?

So I disagree with most of the posters here. Not responding to “where is __” or being able to follow a direction like “get your bottle” by 13 months would indicate a receptive delay. My youngest was born almost 3 months early and is followed by developmental pediatricians and gets OT, PT, and Speech. At his 1 year evaluation (when he was 9 months adjusted) they had him below the cut off for receptive language delay due to not responding to questions or simple directions.
walking I wouldn’t be worried about. If he can cruise on furniture, push a toy, and/or briefly stand or crouch in free space, he’s on track. If he’s struggling to cruise and can’t stand or crouch independently, it’s worth getting checked out.

Or when he says “More” he will say it when eating but doesn’t really get it bc he always has food on his plate. I just don’t want to miss something I should have done that could have helped him reach his highest potential. |
I think that mothers have a sixth sense when something is up. I very much believe in evaluating and see what happens. When my oldest son was 1 I knew that he was on the spectrum. Point blank. My siblings and family members told me I was crazy. The evaluators told me it’s too early to diagnose. Guess who got a formal dx at 7? I’m not saying there is something cv wrong with your child, but I do think you should trust your instincts- even as a first time mother. You are a lot smarter than you even know. Worst thing that happens is you get him evaluated, gets denied and his motor and verbal skills improve naturally.

OP you are the mom. If you are concerned then you should get him evaluated by an early childhood center. He is likely fine but could use a bit of help.
You got this.

My experience with evaluating for therapy was as follows
They need to be significantly delayed in more than 1 area to get approved
You can only get an evaluation once in 6 months

My baby is thirteen months very expressive and meeting every milestone.
He doesn't walk and doesn't understand everything we ask him!
Does he say at least 2-3 words?
Do you take your baby to the pediatrician for regular check ups? They would usually tell you if there are concerns and if you need to go to a specialist for evaluations.

This is interesting and must be location/insurance dependent. Where I live kids birth to 3 only need to fall one standard deviation or more below average in one area to qualify for early intervention, and we have no limits on clinical evaluations. My daughter had 3 or 4 in a few month span because OT is so hard to get into where we live.

This!! I think if they could could benefit from extra boost why not evaluate to see if… take it from there… they’re so young they actually like the sessions too.. I used to get my cooking done during that session 😆
