We've had a few rough years with our 16 year old son. He is now living away at school and refuses to communicate with us. Truthfully, he wasn't communicating much at home but now the distance is so hard and seems to be getting worse with time. Ironically, the longer I don't see him, the worse I miss him. I should probably be in therapy but that's not in the cards right now. Can anyone empathize or give me some coping strategies? Yes, emuna is key. Things can iyh improve but right now, I just feel like I'm drowning...

Can you go visit him?

Can you speak to his rebbeim/teachers to hear how he's doing?

Why can't he be in therapy? If it's financial reasons, can insurance cover? Does your rav or his Yeshiva have a fund?

Edited- I realized you said YOU should be in therapy. Yes, for sure!!
Is your son?

Any idea why he doesn’t want to talk to you?

When my brother was 16 he cut off contact with my parents. This came after he decided on his own to leave yeshiva after the Rosh Yeshiva had been verbally abusive. He blamed my parents. After 6 months of being in a warm, loving yeshiva his rebbeim slowly encouraged him to build a relationship with his parents and now 4 years later the relationship is, I’d say, pretty good. There’s hope!

Is he doing well in yeshiva? Going to class, doing his work etc?
