Half the kids with an ASD diagnosis really have other issues, such as processing issues, bad social skills, or overall low IQ. But they get an ASD diagnosis because that’s a way to access tons of funding. If funding were given based on what’s helpful to a child, but just their diagnosis, half the ASD diagnosis will disappear.
Stated as a mother of a child with a processing issue, who does not have ASD. And whomever she talks to, is told to just get an ASD diagnosis so her child can get the help they need. |
I feel for you. I have a very similar situation paying for therapies out of pocket. Been told to push for asd diagnosis just so I can get things covered but…

I don't know if you're very young and think the 1970's were like the Middle Ages or if you just grew up in a very unusual, cold and heartless culture. But NO. Locking up kids in institutions was not normal.

Absolutely was. People whose children were diagnosed with downs and autism were told to lock them away.

A few things
1. Many children who were even non verbal were not diagnosed with autism 50 years ago. They were labeled as [crazy]. They were excluded from mainstream society. Many drs didn't even know about autism. The numbers you're seeing were from the few children who were able to get a diagnosis.
2. People have children older now which leads to lower quality eggs which some argue leads to children with more delays. Also tons of preemies now live, who are at increased risk for all of these issues that wouldn't have had a chance before
3. There is concrete proof that genetics plays a role and that ASD and ADHD run in families
4. Vaccines don't cause it, but I believe they can trigger something that causes a response. I also believe that the way kids eat can have a huge impact. Our food is filled with inflammatory ingredients and toxins.
5. I believe it seems especially prominent in the frum world because by and large there are way more kids in the frum world and so we see everything with kids on a bigger scale
6. I agree with other posters about asd as a catch all diagnosis these days. As a mother and a teacher I couldn't agree more!

ASD runs in families because if one of the children was vaccine injured and caused autism or adhd
There is a very high risk that other children could be vaccine injured into autism

Oh they were there. You just didn't call it autism

So weird. I live in Brazil, we have one if the most successful children vaccine Program in the world, and I don't know anyone with autism.
My question is, for all those who say it's caused by vaccines, I have a friend in NY who doesn't give any vaccines and has two autistic children

Vaccines don't cause autism 100% of the time, nor are they the sole cause of autism.
There are many factors at play.

My mother has a friend who has a child with autism. Child is a week apart from one of my siblings. My mother says she remembers that from when they were babies, this child was different. And the friend was always asking my mother ‘what’s your child doing? ‘ to compare her child’s lack of progress. Then, when child was diagnosed at 3-4, the mom kept saying it was due to vaccines. But child was already delayed way b4 18 months

My husband and I carry a rare disease that were bH able to avoid giving to our children thanks to IVF with PGT. One of the major symptoms is autism. This is one of countless disorders that may only present with autism and no other symptoms. I strongly believe that ASD is largely genetic, but there’s no single “autism gene.”

Current research shows that about 25% of autism cases are caused by monogenic disorders. Most of those are syndromic. The rest are environmental, or epigenetic.

It absolutely was normal to lock them up. In fact these places were normal through the 90s. Some even managed to stay around longer than that.

This. My son is diagnosed with ASD because it was the only way to get insurance to pay for the help he needs.
