I remember two words that I used to think were yiddish

Familiar which does have a yiddish sounding similar word

And I'm still not sure about Protexia

For me the word is "pogrom" I never remember if it is an English word or not.

Explain to me what makes shmatta more Yiddish than paputch or gabitch

Shmatta is as Polish as popetch is Hungarian.

True but it's still proper English. When I was a kid I was embarrassed to sound "chassidish", so I would call it breaded chicken breast. And then my very American freind was like do you mean schnitzel?

Familia & protektzia are yiddish words.
Familia is also Latin/Spanish

I find that more non yiddish speaking families use the word schnitzel, then the other way around.

Machine (which was the term for a hundred other machines as well)? Automobile with an accent?
Your family, like mine, probably filled in the gaps with a lot of Russian words which felt more authentic just because it wasn't English.

Right and in the US, most Yiddish speakers say car. One is not more or less Yiddish than the other. Just like telephone isn't more yiddish than phone.
I do agree that there is a lot of rich Yiddish that many of us don't know/use anymore. I was just nitpicking on the specific example honestly.
