Shmatta is as Polish as popetch is Hungarian.

It's not. It's the same thing.

It’s both. Many words are.

German & yiddish are very similar. |
True but it's still proper English. When I was a kid I was embarrassed to sound "chassidish", so I would call it breaded chicken breast. And then my very American freind was like do you mean schnitzel?

I wouldn't call it proper english, but it made it in to the English language, like many other words.

Familia & protektzia are yiddish words.
Familia is also Latin/Spanish

Fun fact I didn’t know the word schnitzel as a kid. It was איבערגעצויגן פלייש.

I find that more non yiddish speaking families use the word schnitzel, then the other way around.

I always thought dais was a yiddish or Hebrew word... like the Rabbis sitting on the dais at the dinner
Tumult like chavrusa tumult |
I told DH that dais is an English word and he was so surprised!

Machine (which was the term for a hundred other machines as well)? Automobile with an accent?
Your family, like mine, probably filled in the gaps with a lot of Russian words which felt more authentic just because it wasn't English. |
Here in Israel the Yiddish speakers say Auto (in Israeli accent) for car

Right and in the US, most Yiddish speakers say car. One is not more or less Yiddish than the other. Just like telephone isn't more yiddish than phone.
I do agree that there is a lot of rich Yiddish that many of us don't know/use anymore. I was just nitpicking on the specific example honestly.
