So she gives herself, and he gives himself plus expensive jewelry. Yeah seems balanced.

Lol! I was expecting rocks coming my way... Guess your comment stopped them in their tracks. I even prepared a whole list of counterattacks that I can now safely put away. Thanks

Cufflinks, purchased by my parents.
But I know of a lot of couples where the boy doesn't get anything...

She is the one many times setting up a beautiful apt for both of them….
She had to do the work of mikvah etc….
I’m okay with her getting a gift!

I asked him to give us the gift of not going into debt the night of our marriage and to not give any such gifts. Neither of us came from money, and he paid for the ring on his own, and together we were paying for the wedding and setting up apartment expenses.
There were people who asked what he gave me - and they had no idea how hard it was to hear those questions.

He gave me a necklace (pearls, cuz I'm classic that way ) and I gave him cufflinks. Pretty sure cufflinks is pretty standard in my circles (not everyone, but typical)

I bought my then fiance an expensive cologne he really wanted for our engagement.
However, I do feel that, in a relationship, things don't always need to be the same to be balanced.
For example, our purchases this week: my husband bought a new car, and I got two new mitpachot.
I don't want a car, and he definitely doesn't want a mitpachat.

I actually gave my DH a framed picture of him and his Rosh Yeshiva from our vort. It cost a few dollars but was very meaningful, still on display today on our side table 20 years later
