I read this somewhere, but haven't tried it yet:
Defrost a frozen roll of gefilte fish. Wash & peel a carrot, and poke it through the center of the fish the long way. Then bake (always bake at least 90 min.) - and when you slice it, each slice will have a carrot slice inside! Cute, no?
But it's still a gefilte-fish-carrot recipe. Maybe this can be a basis for something even more original...

my girlfriend sliced the fish, breaded and pan fried it and served with red sauce-she said it was supposed to be like eggplant parmigiana only without the eggplant or cheese-it was good, too

Question - When you bake a Gefilte-Fish roll, Do you add any water to the pan?
I've never tried it. I always cook it in a pot of boiling water with spices, sugar + Onions and Carrots.
Also:
Quote: | Defrost it, flatten and add spinach on top. Roll up jelly roll style. Bake. |
MMEC - How do you flatten it? (rolling-pin? ) Does it stay in one piece? I'm afraid it will fall apart or crumble...
And, do you add anything to the spinach? spices? or an egg?
I would love to try this!
Thanks!!

hannah. do I know you?
that was me!
I used little separate fish pans, each one small and shapped like a fish.
I defrosted the fish, sprayed up each fish tin with pam, and put in some mixture in each. I cooked all the little fish tins inside of a larger tin, into which I put some water. I covered the entrie chad gadya with aluminum foil.
it was cooked for purim. and thanks for reminding me, cuz I may try it again!
years ago, when I was a young kallah, I used to buy the fish loaf and defrost it.....bury the wrapper deeeeeeeep into the garbage...... shape balls out of the defrosted mixture, and pass it off as home made !.
it worked for a good long while. until one day I didnt bury the wrapper deep enough and hubby saw it! LOL

I make the gifelte fish by puting the frozen roll in a loaf pan and coving it with tom sauce or salsa (this is very yummy). I bake it on 350 for about an hour or an hour in a half just depening on the oven. My family loves it.

stir fry dieced carrots, celery, onions, green peppers, garlic pour in tomatoe sauce and simmer for abt half an hr. salt & pepper pour over fish and then bake 1 .5 hrs 350.
if that's the one she used to make.
I just pour tomatoe sauce from a can ontop of fish and bake it.

1) I make gefilte fish by dipping slices into egg and then flavored bread crumbs and frying. I do that when I know I do not have enough/any guests to finish a whole roll. This way, I freeze leftover slices and defrost it for supper/another shabbos.
Tastes just as good as the fresh.
2) Another good recipe for breaded fish is shmear with mayo and coat in flavored crumbs. Bake covered for 1 1/2 hrs and uncover for 1/2 hr.
3) Tomato sauce, sugar, fried onions and peppers, salt and black pepper over roll. Bake covered for 2 hrs.

I fry up onions and mushrooms. I add tomatoe sauce and pour it over the frozen loaf of fish. I bake it coverd on 350 for maybe 1 1/2 hours or 2....it really depends what my oven is set on-if something else is in it!
its really good!!!!!!!!!

1. I take off the paper (VERY IMPORTANT )
2. Open Jar or tomato sauce
3. Pour sauce over frozen loaf
4. Cook until dead.
*People rave over it. And, it's clearly the easiest "recipe" ever.

bake at 350 - and you can leave out the ketchup, it just adds a sweeter taste to it (pinktichel adds sugar, it's probably very similar) -
enjoy!

Bumping this up for anyone that might enjoy it now.
I made a combination of a few recipes from here, last night. 'Twas really good.
I sauted onion, red pepper, and peas & carrots, and crushed garlic.
Poured tomato juice/paste into the pan, and let it boil.
Poured mixture over frozen gefilta fish.
Baked it for approx 25 minutes covered, and then 25 minutes uncovered.
Enjoy.
