So my daughter comes home with a note from school asking for $35 to have her hair checked (like every year). Then she said that the school said they are not going to check until every child brings in the money. Frankly I think that if they are making it mandatory they shouldn't charge for it. Between tuition, buying school supplies and giving more money to the school for more school supplies I'm just about done spending money.

If theyre not going to check until everyone brings in the money then thats fine with me. Dont check for nits and ill save $70+ (I have other kids in the school). They spend 5 minutes max on each kid and use nothing more than a pencil. So why are they even charging that much?

Our school charges $20 per child. I never really thought about it, but come to think of it I am glad they are willing to be busy with this several times throughout the year. I have a neighbor whose child is in a school that leaves it to the mothers to check and they have nits and lice infestations in that school waaaay more often than my kids' school.

Wow, that sounds like a lot of money for lice checks.

We pay $15 per child for the year, which includes checking on the first day of school, the day after Succos, the day after winter break, and the day after Pesach. Anyone who doesn't want to pay the school has to get it done on their own with certified lice checkers (whatever that means) and bring in a note or the child won't be admitted back to school.

Hmm I'd love to be a certified lice checker if it means getting paid $35 per head. Anyone know how I can get "certified"? LOL LOL

That's pretty expensive! Can you have your daughters checked by a private nit-checker and bring a note to school? Our school required that all girls be checked before the first day of school and I know that the private nit-checkers charged around $12 a head.

ok I just read the note again and it said that the money is for "nit checking and books not covered by NY state funds". Do all schools charge extra for these books?

We pay almost $100 for books not covered by the Board of Ed, so that sounds like a bargain to me.

Why do frum schools seem to have so much more lice than public schools? When DD was in frum schools, she was CONSTANTLY getting sent home for nits. At one point a full 2/3 of the entire student body was out of school until they could get the epidemic under control. shock

When I switched her to public school, she said that only one or two kids ever got sent home. I asked her if they check, and she said that everyone gets checked, and if the teacher sees you itching you'll get sent to the nurses office for another check. They're really on top of it. No extra charge, either. Lady

Not in my public school. The kids wear their hair down and I'm always sending the kids to the nurse to get checked...usually it's too late and the kid is sent home.

I wish they would check systematically like they do in the frum schools.

35 per head isn't cheap! They should give a discount if you have a few kids in the school. By us its ten bucks per kid which is pretty reasonable.

Just curious, do you get a refund if they miss one?

I attended frum schools throughout and don't remember lice epidemics ever. Very rarely, a classmate was sent home following one of the regular checks. Maybe once a year, at most.

She said that it included the book fee. Pretty cheap, after all, I think. (Though I still can't understand why the book fees can't come out of the insanely pricey tuition we pay.)

My girls school charges $10 for the first child and then $7 each child after for nit checking for the year. I think I pay $15 for book fund.

We Pay thirty five dollars for nit check and fifty five for book fee. So yes I think you are getting a bargain. I am happy that my daughters head is being checked and I gave up trying to figure out what tuition is for if we have all these add ons after.

They don't. The school pays them per hour. The money you pay goes toward their fee for coming around several times a year.

when I was a public school student, lice checks were done by the nurse. 2x a year.

shouldn't this be part of the duties of the school nurse? why the extra charge?
