My step father makes an awesome split pea soup, sfardi style. He gave me the recipe and I made it for lunch today. It came out great and I wanted to share.

Take a bunch of split peas, a little bit of pearl barley, some diced carrots, and put in a pot (I used a pressure cooker) and add water. Add salt, garlic powder, black pepper, lots of sweet paprika, and some hawaj for soup (yeminite spice). Cook until the split peas fall apart.

Eat, enjoy!

You know, you can even toss a couple of those turnips in the bottom of the cholent pot!

Hawayedge. You can probably buy packaged Hawayedge in one of the "Israeli" stores in Brooklyn. It's a Yemenite spice, mixture of a bunch of spices including cardomum.

I always add chopped celery (stalks and leaves) for soup containing peas, beans and lentil. It's supposed to make legumes cook faster and less gassy. worth a try.

I love adding celery leaves to soups, especially bean soups. Such nice flavor.
