That it is rude open a phone book & call random people when collecting tzedaka for whatever cause they're going for.
(It's also unsafe to call random strangers.)

Why do you think people do that?
I know high school girls that get lists for schools or organizations to fundraise.
Why do you think people are randomly opening phone books?

What an upside down world we live in that it's rude to ask for tzedaka. They are doing you a favor of presenting to you a mitzvah opportunity.

Because I'm constantly getting phone calls from kids collecting. When I ask how they got my number, they reply "from the phone book."
My sister asked a boy if his mother knows that he's calling random people, he said no & hung up.
The kids collect for their school or organization & they just call up random people.

It is not rude to ask for tzedakah. It is rude (and unsafe) for children to call random strangers and beg them to contribute for their cause. And when told that we're not willing to give a cc# to them, they reply "okay tell me where you live & I'll come pick up the money."
Their parents have no idea what they're up to.

I got a call on chanukah from a girl who told me she goes to x school and they need to collect signatures of people who will not watch any videos on chanukah. This is actually not the first time I received such a call, last year a girl in a different town called me.vthey both told me they opened the phone book and just called as many people as possible.

The Jewish community phone book. All/most residents are listed.

I don't answer calls from numbers I don't know. If it's important they can leave a message and I can call them back.
I highly suggest this to anyone who wants to avoid such calls, in additional to all kinds of solicitations throughout the day. It's far more effective than posting here in hopes parents will enlighten their children about polite fundraising.

And also… hold the door for people! I have a stroller and you walk out or walk in with no care about someone behind you baffles me!
