My child is severely allergic to sesame. I don't understand why the bakeries have sesame everywhere! I can't buy challah almost ever as they will usually have some sesame on it and most of the challah is covered in it!
I personally don't even like the taste of sesame on challah and I'm curious if it's so widespread because other people do.

I like all types of seeds on my challah, so do my family members… we find plain challah or sourdough without some type of seeds to be bland…. Enjoy everything spice best.

I always sprinkle on the sesame. We like the flavor and it looks prettier.

I am sorry you have to deal with this, it's not easy. But sesame seeds on bread is delicious. There's a reason why it's all over the bakery.
Life with a child with allergies means a lot of cooking and baking at home for the parents. It's just the way it is.

I heard it actually resembles the mun according to some opinions- white, small and roundish, so many put it on Shabbos for challah for that reason.
I had a child also allergic to sesame. BH she outgrew it. But her dr. allergist said- she wasn't so worried if she swallowed a whole sesame by accident since it probably goes out whole and her body won't really register it. Techina is more of a problem obviously.
So although I would never give her a sesame challah obviously, I would give her plain challah from a regular bakery after looking it over to make sure no visible seeds on it.

It’s funny bc I never put sesame on my homemade challah - usually it’s a quick sprinkle of a homemade streusel. We had a recent guest with a sesame allergy and the mom said she could just bring her child her own challah and I said nope that is definitely something he can eat here! The smile on his face was priceless ❤️

OP, are you in Israel? This is a huge problem in Israel. Outside Israel, it's cultural and location and sometimes bakery-specific. Where we are, there is little sesame and either plain ir poppy seed. Where I'm from, sesame or plain. Where my in laws are in Israel and everywhere we go, sesame on everything including the rugelach.

I like sesame. I never found it to have a very strong taste.
I prefer sesame to poppy seeds, which look awful if they get stuck in one's teeth.

I like tge taste sesame gives challa, but as I often make rolls for the kids to take for school lunches, I don't use it. Our schools are 'no nut no sesame' zones.
