My 7 month old spent the last 40 minutes shrieking his head off before crying himself to sleep. His second tooth is coming in. He wasn’t like this by the first tooth. He’s inconsolable. No teething rings or cold washcloths helped. Even now he wakes up every few minutes to cry. Is this normal or is something else going on?

He doesn’t have a fever

I don’t know. I haven’t seen him scratching at his ears. And he doesn’t have a fever. Is it possible to have an ear infection without a fever?

Doesn’t sound like it’s his tooth.
Give him a once over and see if you notice anything.
Is something like a string wrapped around his toes or fingers? (Happened to one of my kids)
Take his temperature.
See if pain meds help.
You know your kid best, but your description would point to something other than teething being the cause.

Thank you, all. I checked his temperature and it’s completely fine, even on the low end. I’ll give him Motrin the next time he wakes up in pain. I don’t have Tylenol so Motrin will have to do. DH is convinced it’s teething. He’s our first so I’m really not sure. I just know he wasn’t like this by the first tooth.

I did check and didn’t find any hair or string wrapped anywhere.

He was a little cuckoo today because he barely napped - he was awakened by pretty much every nap because we had appointments. Is it possible he was just shrieking from the combination of teething pain and just being super overtired?

Do I take him to the doctor tomorrow?

My pediatrician is generally against giving it unless there’s a fever that’s going too high
