the section 8 application was opened recently. The first time in 15 years. Did anyone hear back?
I got an email I was put on the wait-list. Is that a good sign? They are making a lottery for 200,000 to be put on the wait-list. And then it said all those that wont be chosen will go on a wait-list.
So how do I know which one I was put on???
Anyone else heard back?

(To clarify, even if you won the lottery- you may be picked in 15+ years...)

Does that mean we both won the lottery?? Or we on a waitlist because we didn't win?

The 200,000 is the waitlist :
You can wait a long time on the waitlist to actually receive a voucher and then you need to find an apartment within the guidelines -
Once on the waitlist, applications will be given a priority code, with preference going first to applicants who are in “inaccessible housing” and have mobility challenges, and then to seniors and people with disabilities.
So don't hold your breath

200,000 will be added to the existing wait list which I believe has around 4000 people currently and every month going forward, 1000 vouchers will be given out to people from that list...
So it will take almost 17 years until all of those vouchers are distributed..

"After the application period closes, 200,000 households will be randomly selected through a lottery to be added to the waitlist, “ensuring that all… have equal opportunity to be chosen regardless of when their applications were received,” according to the city.
This group will join a much smaller pool of 3,759 households currently on the waitlist, NYCHA confirmed. The authority will then aim to issue 1,000 vouchers each month, until it hits its maximum distribution. NYCHA is currently capped at 115,346 active vouchers and has 96,509 Section 8 participants either leased up or searching, about 84 percent of that total.
Once on the waitlist, applications will be given a priority code, with preference going first to applicants who are in “inaccessible housing” and have mobility challenges, and then to seniors and people with disabilities. "

If I'm reading this correctly, only 115,346 people can have vouchers.
96,509 already have vouchers.
Leaves 18,837 slots open.
203,759 people are now on a wait list to get those slots.
Priority will be given to elderly and mobility-challenged people.

No- now it's capped at 115,346. All of those 203, 759 will get vouchers , but at the rate of 1000/month and people in certain categories will have priority.

So not everyone got the email about the waitlist?
Did everyone else get a different email?

I don't recall seeing an email. I guess I didn't get onto the waitlist. I would like to search my emails. Where would it have come from?
If you fail to respond to the email would that invalidate the waitlist slot?
