How does it work? Do you really pay 40% of your income?

How it Works
Section 8 pays part of the rent for low- and moderate-income families who want to rent in the private market. Eligibility for this program is based on a family’s gross annual income and family size. Generally, families pay no more than 40% of their monthly income towards their rent. NYCHA pays the rest to the property owner.

If you are eligible you fill out the form and it works by raffle. It’s not a guarantee if you win they will call you.

Thanks. Is there anyway to increase your chances? How much do you end up paying?

Not sure. I just applied today. We are a family of five bh. And we make less than $83k which I think is the cut off for a family of five.

Hah. If I’d buy a house the mortgage would be 100% of my income! But we’re in a two bedroom basement as a family of 6..would love to get out but can’t afford to spend 40% of our income on rent when tuition is the other 60%

Yes not sure how anyone does it with tuition though. If you’re spending 40% on rent would love to know how there’s anything left over after tuition

So if you’re a family of 5 qualifying for section 8 you’re making less than 7k a month. Let’s say 3k a month for tuition, and then 40% of your income is 2800. And this is pretax. Not sure why everyone jumped on me for asking how that’s feasible

Where did you find this? I think usually families pay 30%, unless their apartment is bigger than allowable by their family size or their full rent is more than the maximum allowable for their size apt
