Hi there!

I got 2 bread proofing baskets and some decorating tools as a gift and would love to get started.
My friend offered me a starter.
Can I make sourdough without a special pot/pan to bake it in? Not in the budget at the moment. Any other equipment I need?
Can someone give me a weekly step by step list do what to do?

Thanks!

IMUSA C20666-1063310W 6-Quart Blue Speckled Enamel Stock Pot with Lid

Above is a link to a very cheap pot. Just don’t preheat it.

If you have any cast iron that would be great but you can theoretically use any pot that’s large enough and can go in the oven

You will have to feed your starter weekly and keep it in the fridge

Usually once a week you will create a baby starter to use for sourdough bread. It’s a long process from start to finish (making the bread) but it’s worth it and really simple once you get the hang of it

If you have Challah pans like this, you can start by making sourdough loaf bread before investing in any new pots. Or you can make baggets.

You can get a quality enameled Cast iron pot for about $40.
I bake multiple sourdoughs every week and use the Lodge 4 qt round which makes a perfect size.

I like to make small sourdough rolls. I use a cupcake tin for that.
I also saw one youtube video where she used a cookie sheet with a metal bowl (like the kitchen aid one) turned upside down over the dough

So cool, how do you cover the loaves in the cupcake tin?

A Dutch oven really makes a big difference in the spring (puffiness) of the bread. If you can't get one now then put a pan of water in the oven while the bread bakes to create the steam.

I don't cover them. And bake for only 20-25 minutes.

I bake sourdough bread daily on an aluminum cookie sheet. No special baskets, or dutch ovens. I bake two artisan loaves and they are delicious, nice oven spring and great texture.
