For dinner to night we had hamburgers with...pareve cheese on top(Tofutti). It was good - but really weird. Eeep...I felt like I was doing something non-kosher!

Any BT ever tried this - what did you think about the taste? Is it realistic?

Does pareve cheese taste anything like real cheese? Does it melt the same?

it tastes a lot like real cheese - weirdly so...

and the melting...eh not as good in general it seems (it kinds of just softens)- but on a bun it has the same consistency

My brother, who is not frum, wanted pepperoni pizza, so I bought pareve pepperoni and put it on the homemade pizza. I know that a kosher pizza is sold like that. Because there is so much soy food available frum people have become used to pareve ice cream with meat meals and pareve margerine at fleishig tables and pareve milk in coffee at meat meals.

my mother's a BT. Shortly after she got married a big rav came to her house for a meal and she wanted to make something gourmet. One problem: the recipe called for bacon bits.

Problem solved! the supermarket sells "facon bits"! well, the big day arrived and the rav was pushing the food around on his plate and avoiding the "facon".

Oh well... no more "gourmet" meals for my mother. Wink

We get a lot a veggie burgers. One day I noticed a guest making herself a sandwich with a veggie burger and cheese. I don't know if I could do it, but in the same way I couldn't bring myself to eat peanut butter and Jelly. Just not used to it!

I've used the fake pepperoni on pizzas and even managed to fool my dad (who hates soy more than treife). The fake hot dogs from Yves Veggie Cuisine are also pretty convincing.

However, dh doesn't like fake ham or bologna in the home, even though I showed him the hechsher. It weirds him out. However, he tolerates my fake seafood (Dynasea is the best) in the fridge but won't touch it himself.

The weirdest thing for me, though, was going to the kosher McDonald's in Ramat Gan. For so long, a Big Mac was forbidden fruit. There was a McDonald's across from my old Hebrew School, we all knew that it was treife, and we all loved the fried grease smell that it gave off. I suspect that kosher McDonald's played a role in my 10 lbs weight gain during a 2 week trip to Israel. They even had kosher l'pesach chicken nuggets and quarter pounders!

I like fake meat a lot more than fake cheese. It tastes a lot more authentic.

I once made that but with parve burgers too. add some fries and a soy milkshake and you got a 100% pareve version of a happy meal? But I must admit it didnt taste too good.

The toffutti pareve cheese is not bad on a burger, tastes almost like the real thing. ( Yes I was a bad girl at one stage in my life, no mussar please). I think most on this site have it in their heads that it is disgusting because even though it is not real cheese, it is so ingrained in you that it is not allowed. Also there is the maraas ayin issue. I guess that is why the whole issue of kitniyot on Pesach came about. (People eating corn bread etc)

I can't say I never tried it. Yeves here in canada became Ou D halav stam so can't eat that but it ws good I got to admit, but Zoglos fake stuff is gross sorry and also if you all only thought for a moment how much chemicals there is in that food I try to stay away from it cause its not healthy proof most of the time (and sorry for being discusting) it makes you go to the bathroom almost right away. I have never tried McDonalds the smell makes me nauseas or eaten in any treif american/canadian restaurant. I guess if you must have those foods and it helps you keep kosher thats what its there for. One thing is true the fake crab is good and sushi is the best thing invented in my opinion don't know how I lived in russia without it.
