My boys pretty much stick with Hebrew but dd mixes up her sentences badly. Today she asked "Can Ayala come ailainu?" I asked her to ask the whole question in English so she said "But I don't know aich omrim Ayala in English!"

I think I learned that it's not a big deal that little kids mix up their languages. Heck, I did it when I was in seminary and got back...

I don't really see the similarity. You grew up in America, spent one year here probably surrounded by Americans, and then went back to America. Our kids were born in Israel, speak English (or at least hear it) at home, speak Hebrew in school and at their friends' houses, and go to America once in a few years. There's nowhere they're "getting back" to...

Just read this now...there is definitely a similarity: it's a matter of being immersed in two languages at once and mixing them up, that's all. And there's no problem in terms of language development.

and I still mix up my languages.
I did not know what a ladle was till I was 14.
really.
and if you hear me speak to my mother and you only spoke english you would understand abou 1/2 the conversation.
I stick in these words with my family too- and my hubby always teases me when I till him to "put this on the shayish" or could you put the tzidanit in the car?
(counter and cooler)

I was talking to my friend who has lived in israel for over 20 yrs now. She said something to one of her kids and I asked her what language they replied in-she couldnt remember!!!! she has no idea what language is used.
another friend told me her kids speak to her in english, but to each other in hebrew.
