I was raised that those who eat on fast days (children, women who are pregnant, nursing, people sick) should eat very plain food.
Enough to eat and be nourished but nothing special.

Cheerios and milk, bread and cheese, pasta. And to drink basic water and milk.

Meaning to be aware it's a fast day and act with aveilus even if we're eating.

My kids are all complaining that their friends but takeout sesame chicken or pizza, slurpees, milkshakes today and they want also.
It doesn't sit well with me.

Anyone agree?

I agree, but I teach my kids to do it as a sensitivity, not as a rule.

Honestly? I was raised the same way, but I couldn’t care less what others do. If someone wants to eat a 5 course meal today, unless it’s one of my kids living in my house, it’s not my concern.
We are fasting to commemorate the drive that ultimately led to the destruction of the aid hamikdash so this is not really something that I would focus on today (or really any day)

If my kids complained, I would say something like this. This is a fast day, and for whatever reason you are eating, but that doesn’t mean we have a 5 course meal. Just as with everything else in life, different people do different things. This is one of the things that your friends are doing differently.

That's what she should tell them. It's a sad day and we just don't.

A fast day that commemorates the Churban isn't a time for special treats. But whether slurpees and sesame chicken is a treat is relative, depends how you brought up your kids. Maybe you can order some sesame chicken for the Seuda tonight.

In this house we don't eat treats and fancy foods today. What other people do in their houses is non of our concern.
Simple enough?

What would you be serving differently on another early erev shabbos. My kids still need lunch and before shabbos food (no matter what you want to call it LOL)

School still doing shabbos party....
