I really don't get something. Maybe someone can explain this to me.

I was advised today to stop flushing toilet paper in the toilet. Otherwise it will ruin the pipes and in a few years (maybe longer) we will have a big problem that might cost say, $5000.

Instead we should put the disgusting TP in a garbage and take out the garbage frequently.

What? The idea of having feces covered toilet paper sitting in the bathroom is completely disgusting to me. And yes, it might cost us $5000 every 8 years or so. But you know my bills are already a fortune. My mortgage, my tuition, and everything else. If you told me that it costs me around $1000 a year (or $85 a month) for the luxury of flushing toilet paper I'd grab that deal like a black Friday sale. Am I missing something?

Who told you this? I’ve never heard that flushing toilet paper is a problem. I mean, it’s MADE to be flushed.

Sorry, that sounds crazy. Tissues and wipes will cause clogs but regular toilet paper won't. And I live in an old house with old plumbing (for a lot longer than 5 yrs).

Where do you live that you have this problem? Are you sure you trust the person who gave you this advice?

I'm on your side, I would absolutely flush the toilet paper and pay $5k every few years..

Newer plumbing I would say last 30-40 years in New York you shouldn’t have any issues as long as you only put tissues and no baby wipes ever not even flushable ones.
But I know people with older plumbing that still flush and have a contract with a plumber who comes to clean every so often (maybe once or twice a year )

If you have the issue and do maintenance cleaning you won’t have a thousand dollar build up emergency.
I live in an approximately 20 year old house and had a sewer backup once in all the years when a new tenant flushed flushable baby wipes. We actually pulled out two baby wipes right near the main pipe and everything started draining again.

Op, were you speaking to my husband??? That's what he does and tells my kids to do.
My therapist is horrified.
I think it's disgusting, but I have bigger fish to fry.
Anyone who wants to hug, I will take it as genuine.

I don't know your situation, so it's hard to advise. However, in terms of having feces laying around your bathroom, it costs a lot less than $85 a month to have a system similar to the diaper trash that seals the bags as they go in. It shouldn't smell at all.

In terms of cost, a good sewer backup can cost a lot more than $5000, plus the stress and smell.
If you're okay with dealing with the backup, they have insurance in New York City that covers just that for about $12 or $13 a month. https://www.awrusa.com/

I grew up learning that nothing goes in the toilet but waste. Yes we have wastebaskets by the toilets in each bathroom , you can get a flip top of you don't want to see the contents. Do you just not have a garbage can in your bathrooms?

Op I agree with you. Wipes I wouldn't flush but toilet paper....umm yes. And my house was built during the great depression. I have no idea how old the pipes are. We've been here over 10 years and it's been OK bli ayin hara

Use septic safe toilet paper it breaks down well. I would never let anyone put it in the garbage can that is so problematic hygiene wise. Even if the can has a cover you are inhaling fecal matter all day.

Idk about that but order a $30 bidet on amazon you will NOT regret it. Save money on Tp, better for environment, and feels amazingly clean!!!

The issue can also be with what type of TP you use and how much.
Kids need to be taught to use 2 squares at a time and not half the roll.
Also, the 3ply is really thick and many systems cannot handle it. I was told 2ply is fine but 3ply ends up getting stuck more often.

Also flush often. Sometimes a system needs a double flush if it was a lot of waste/tp... (tmi sorry).

I have a garbage can in my bathroom, but it's not for used toilet paper. We use it for tampons and pads, q-tips, makeup remover wipes, the hair from the drain after a shower and many other things.

my husband does the same. Even though we officially use flushable wipes and never had any issues. I've given up in trying to change him. If it's something his father does he'll do so too.
Op, I personally wouldn't move into a house where the pipes can't take flushable wipes. It's a number one priority for me.

Toilet paper dissolves in water quickly.

But you can really eliminate tue use if almost all toilet paper with a good bidet.

I have a Toto washlet and a roll lasts for months because you need almost none and even if uiu use a wipe and toss in a covered can lined with a plastic bag, the wipe is very clean after using the bidet.

Just a reminder when you use bathrooms in other homes do not do this! Its not the norm and Im pretty sure most people (I surely would) would be disgusted to find out a guest put their tp in my garbage can. Omg I cant even think about it without gagging.

I've never heard anyone else ever refer to a pipe system that can officially handle flushable wipes. Everyone across the board always says there is no such thing as a truly flushable wipe.

I've lived in 2 different apartments and use sleek wipes. Wouldn't manage without.
