Got it. It’s the curse of the lower middle class. Really not the fault of the bakeries.

The way the economy flourishes is that people use every opportunity to turn things into a business. Even more so in the frum econcomy where we have so many seasonal items people think of. There are no standards here. If you want to treat yourself to an outrageously expensive donut, feel free. I don't think anybody here feels like they MUST because it is chanuka. More like it is a splurge lkavod yom tov if you can afford it.

Dunkin donuts isn't necessarily automatically kosher & they definitely don't use ingredients with heimish hechshers, which is more expensive. And they're mass produced, which is cheaper as well.

Not all dunkin donuts are certified kosher.

I purchased the $2.45 donuts.
No one asked for or wanted anything different. And the little kids get 1/2, because they are HUGE , and they can’t eat more than that anyway. For this price, we can get custard, caramel, rosemary chocolate, sprinkles, powdered sugar. So many options! My kids don’t even care for the expensive donuts.
Honestly, if a basic custard donut was $5, or $10, I’d be upset. As it is, the price went up. But so did the price of everything. Eggs are $5.50/dozen! Now that’s insane!!!!!
I find the price of lots of luxuries obscene. But because I have plenty of ‘normal’ options for decent enough prices, let whoever is crazy enough to buy expensive donuts be happy, and the owners earn money off them 🤷♀️.
Most luxery items have obscene markup prices. No need for the average joe to purchase luxury. $10 donuts from Hava Java are the same as a designer coat. Not for everyone. And most grocery stores are making upwards of $500k a year in net profits, after all expenses. And that’s on a bad year 🤷♀️🤷♀️. I’m more annoyed about being ripped off on basics. You know, milk, cereal, bread, flour, etc. where the same items cost less at the non-kosher store not far over.
Personally? We buy donuts once a season (the cheaper ones 😉). For other days? Rhodes dinner rolls cost way less. And everyone gets to go crazy if they want to with toppings at home.

$2 a donut is not crazy, let’s just assume (and I’m lowballing here), the whole thing with ingredients and labor cost them $1 to make

I'm so grateful for the leizher rav (however you spell) that worked an agreement with the local non Jewish supermarket in london to do kosher donuts for Chanuka. 5 pack for £1!!!! That's $1.25! The custard ones are delicious and so so affordable

Depends on the flavour.
The actual donuts are very light and good. I don't like the jam ones but custard are excellent. In previous years I've seen more interesting flavours like chocolate orange and salted caramel that were delicious as well, hoping they still bring them out!

Me too, and I've never heard of these prices
More like $35 for people just starting out, otherwise 40/45/50 is typical
Why is it 100-200 by you???
