$2 a donut is not crazy, let’s just assume (and I’m lowballing here), the whole thing with ingredients and labor cost them $1 to make

I know of a bakery (NY for reference) that sales basic donuts to distributors for .86, they still have to deliver it, pay their employees act, and make money, then the groceries have their own markup. If the groceries get it for over a $1 and sell for $2 that’s not robbery… that’s business.

Bare in mind that donuts work like bread. The groceries only pay for what they sell. The cost of the leftover donuts trickles down to the customer…

Regarding the $10 donuts - it’s like the chocolates where 4 truffles are $15-$20 it’s a luxury gifting item…

Having said that… I make homemade donuts

I don’t get the question. It’s one thing to complain about groceries going up in price because we literally need food to eat. Or to complain about the cost of health insurance and how little they cover. But a fancy donut? That’s like complaining that designers charge $1000 for a pair of shoes. Don’t buy the $1000 shoes. Don’t buy the $12 donuts. I promise you’ll more than survive.

I think the complaint is how everyone is making it a normal part of chag. When they first started selling $10 a few years ago everyone was horrified. Now they are everywhere and becoming the norm to serve at a nice party. It just ups the standards. If people could say no when something first comes up we wouldn’t have this constant doubling and tripling of standards.

More like $35 for people just starting out, otherwise 40/45/50 is typical
Why is it 100-200 by you???

I have no idea. 200 is some brand name lady I know. Mine started out I think at 70 and has been steadily going up.

Dunkin' donuts are kosher. And taste the same. Stop complaining and don't buy the overpriced ones. I buy $2 donuts and that's it. In richer areas the stores charge whatever they can. I guarantee that the rent is higher there too.

They are not pas yisroel. And made on dairy equipment. Some with dairy powder ingredients.

That right away makes a big difference in the price.

Anyone who is not makpid on pas yisroel or chalav yisroel can easily buy at Kristpy Keme or Dunkin. But for those who can’t it’s not an option.

(You can also make donuts at home. I made the rhodes for 36/4.50 and they were delicious. )

So it's not the price in your area, it's the price of some name brand lady. Surely you see the difference

No different than meat boards, fancy decor, and all the others things people flaunt.

Either you can afford it or you can't. Or you indulge in a little in honor of the chag.

There's always been people who have more and who have less. Serving expensive and fancier dishes, cuts of meat etc for chagim and shabbos

Depends on the flavour.
The actual donuts are very light and good. I don't like the jam ones but custard are excellent. In previous years I've seen more interesting flavours like chocolate orange and salted caramel that were delicious as well, hoping they still bring them out!

Not everyone likes the Morrisons doughnuts. I guess it's a matter of taste. But for those who do, the price is unbelievably cheap.

I haven't heard of a SM charging 35 or even 50 in Bklyn (Boro Park specifically) in a few years. The last time I paid 35 was close to ten years ago and that SM is charging over 80 the last time I checked (last year...)

As insane as it sounds, average price is over $100.
I know that Lakewood is cheaper.

I'm not in Lakewood. I'm in Brooklyn, not BP, but not too far away either and this sounds totally insane to me!!

Here in Stamford Hill, the speciality "luxury" doughnuts are sold for $3.30 each. So yes, Americans are being ripped off big time. Our eggs costs more over here and some of the doughnut fillings and toppings are imported too, which add extra costs.

If our stores and bakeries are earning a profit I can only imagine what a killing yours are making from the hugely inflated prices.

ETA

The most expensive doughnut possible to buy, is sold at a particular very expensive micro bakery. It's a cheese doughnut and costs $6.60. They also sell doughnuts in the $4 and $5 dollar range. But you absolutely cannot buy anything more expensive in our area.

Americans, you are being taken for an expensive ride.

I have not taken this course and have no affiliation with it, but SkillNosh has a $75 course on how to wash and set your own shaitel.

My son was born on Chanukkah, a few years ago I called up a place to order donuts to give to his class on his birthday.
One place gave me a price then said "Oh we are going up for the week of Dec. 8" such as they sell donuts for $0.99, but Dec. 8 that week they are selling them for $1.25

I called up another place and they said out donuts are $0.99
(don't remember the real price)

Ever since then I have seen that some places really do raise the price in honer of Chanukkah.

Either she is the only sheitel macher in the entire state or people pick hundred dollar bills from the trees just like that.
I would like to hear how this SM *justifies* her charges. She is allowed to charge what she wants but I would like to hear her side of the story.

Just because you think you're entitled to a cheap donut, doesn't make it highway robbery.
Highway robbery means charging unreasonable prices for necessities.
Fancy donuts are a luxury. They're a specialty item with a specialty price. Just like any other specialty food item that's expensive.
People here seem to think that they're entitled to Fancy donuts for cheap.

Just want to say that according to Merriam Webster, highway robbery is excessive profit or advantage derived from a business transaction. So the term does apply here. And I am appalled at the prices and the fact that people buy them in big quantities...

The stores are good at tempting the consumers and then adding a hefty price tag. They are absolutely taking advantage of the Chanukah season. I find it appalling that they are looking to make 500 hundred percent profit. It's not ethical.

I’m baffled by this thread honestly. Do you also calculate how much each curl or wave cost your sheitel macher? I don’t think their price is justified so I don’t buy. Obviously they think their item is worth the price tag. No harm done.

I bought a Zahava wig, paid $2800. A month later she tells me if I wear it everyday I will need a new one in 6 months, (what????). Within 6 weeks I have the beginning of a bald spot (she tells me it will cost in range of $450 to repair). Within 4 months it is really going bald at the top... I am at the Lubavitch Rebbe's Ohel erev YK and never do this but stop a woman and ask her where she bought her wig and learn about "the wig outlet." I sign up and go to their 2 for $800 sale on erev sukkos. Wig looks just the same if not better than the $2800 wig. Don't be fools, don't be taken whether it's sheitels or donuts. You want to splurge, that's your choice.

Which sane person sells a $2800 sheitel with a 6 month life? Only a ganev.
