Just because they can charge what they wish doesnt make it not highway robbery

Fancy donuts are indeed not a necessity. But can you justify their markup if all they did was fill and decorate?

Just because you think you're entitled to a cheap donut, doesn't make it highway robbery.
Highway robbery means charging unreasonable prices for necessities.
Fancy donuts are a luxury. They're a specialty item with a specialty price. Just like any other specialty food item that's expensive.
People here seem to think that they're entitled to Fancy donuts for cheap.

Who says I don't?
I'm just asking if it's OK to exploit people when selling seasonal items just because they can.

It's filled & decorated with expensive ingredients & they're hand made. They most likely need to work overtime or higher additional staff for this.
They don't need to justify their prices to you. It's a luxury. Luxuries tend to be expensive. This isn't any different than fancy cakes & miniatures for simchas. They're also expensive, yet no one is ranting about that.

If you choose to get the interesting and exotic ones, you’re also choosing to pay those prices.
Donuts once a year are not something to pick a fight about. |
I agree. I don't think we're being ripped off, I think it's just nuts to buy it at that price!
I make my own at home. It's a fun activity. We buy the filler separately
In terms of the ripoff, sure, you can technically buy it for $0.79, but good luck convincing the wholesaler to sell it to you at that price!

It's NOT exploiting people!!! It's not a necessity & no one is forcing anyone to buy them.
If you made a choice to buy a luxury item, then you're not being exploited by paying the price.
You're making it seem as if fancy donuts are a necessity.

You're missing the point.
People here do not seem to think we're entitled to fancy donuts for cheap, but store owners here seen to think they're entitled to sell at crazy prices just because they can.

It’s called capitalism. Supply and demand. It boggles my mind how many people don’t get that simple concept.

I think the prices are high. I am also relatively frugal, but I try to focus on value more than price.
I did buy one donut and I was not impressed. It cost around $5, and even for $0.10 I would not have been impressed. That's just my opinion. Other people really enjoy donuts and would pay even $15.00 for one.
I don't think that bakeries are intentionally taking advantage of people and charging money.

$1.50 to $2 a doughnut |
Nope. I bought custard, jelly and plain with the holes. $2.50 a piece. I was annoyed.
We are a family of 4 and it was $10.
My local grocery sold Sterns for $2 a piece. It was evening when we bought them and they had a buy 4 get 2 special.

Sorry, but you are missing the point.
The stores are doing business, not chessed. As long as people will buy for this price, they will charge this price. Stores are not doing anything wrong by charging alot for luxury items.
Having complaints on stores that charge alot for luxuries, is a very entitled attitude.

There is no medical price gouging here.
Stores charge what people are ready to pay.
A fancy donut is not a necessity. It's a luxury.

I’m baffled by this thread honestly. Do you also calculate how much each curl or wave cost your sheitel macher? I don’t think their price is justified so I don’t buy. Obviously they think their item is worth the price tag. No harm done.

Lol now sheitel machers going up rapidly from $45 to $55-60 is actually something I have a problem with, especially sheitel machers who have no overhead expenses. But I usually leave when the price jumps too high and find someone newer and more affordable.

Yes actually, the shaitel machers who charge crazy prices for sets are the ones I do not patronize. A curl is just not worth that much money.

I miss the $20 goose liver truffle doughnuts they were selling in Breadbery Lakewood last year. Not.

Exactly. And the curl seems more necessary than the overpriced over sweetened over decorated donuts.

How is it exploiting?
I can make sesame chicken for my whole family for $25 or I can buy one portion for one person for about the same price. Are they exploiting me? No. I’m paying for convenience, for not having to buy ingredients and then have them leftover etc, sometimes for better taste (almost always for more junk )
I can make my own challah for cheaper than buying in the store. And I do!
