I had a Yona in my class, but it is also my grandfather's name, so it was always a little weird to me...

As my dd would say, but this is really blunt, "Why would you name your kid a name that could be for a boy or a girl?"
A few nights ago we were talking about names and that's when she said it.
The truth is that Yona is mostly used for male, Zissel is mostly used for female (I don't know of any male zissel besides rav simcha zissel), and Simcha is predominantly male ( and is more common than Yona as a female). |
Your DD has a valid point. Simcha and Yonah are today accepted and mainstream.

Both
I actually know a Yonah who married a Yona.
I know an even number of both.

Simcha for a boy if you are ashkennazi and Simcha for girls if you are edot hamizrach.
Non-religious Israelis have also Tal as a unis-x name.
Personally I am very against unis-x names except for Simcha and Yonah. |
I know many non edot mizrach girls named Simcha. This isn't a rule at all.

Your "rules" are very outdated. First of all, who has not heard of the book, by Yaffa Ganz, "Safta Simcha", definitely not edot mizrach and the first book came out in 1980.
We have a few tals in our ati leumi community, both male and female, not only chilonim
And I know a few ashkenazi female yonas as well
There are no fast rules at all.

I grew up with a girl named chanina in my bais Yaakov. She was not Sephardi at all.
Neither was she teased. Super confident, actually.
I don't think being teased about names is as common as people make it sound here. My kids all have less common names, names that on this website are deserving of pity, and so far bH we've had literally no instances of any teasing or social issues. (Large family BH, kids between 2 and 17)

I know a few Ashkenazi female Yonas and Simchas as well as male, I wouldn't assume it to be a boy or a girl name it could totally be either.
