It only matters if it’s your parent or grandparent

I heard a child can name after a parent even if the grandparent has the same name. But they should ask permission first.

I know a lady whose great-grandchild was named her name. She understood it was a parent but was extremely hurt that no one even asked her.

Same. We had where someone was using one of the names, so they asked permission.

Op, since your parent is mochol, you can pm me for a Ruv who should be able to help you.

I don't feel comfortable posting here (FG might be lurking. Who knows)

I’ve asked this and was told that even though halachically it’s muttar it’s a terrible idea, even if the person says they’re mochel, if they get sick later they might blame you or you might blame yourself.

My sil just did this for a name of a grandparent (babys great grandparent).
Said grandparent isn't frum and they wouldn't want to name after when they are nifter, they had a different relative on the other side with the same name so they used it now as a second name. - their chassidish Rav said they should do it.

OP, I hope this relative lives until long after all your children are born, but if chv something happens, you'd never be able to name after them.

DH's gf and my gf had the same first name so I didn't use it. Used a version of it but not the name. Then 10 months later, dh's gf was niftar. So many nephews named after him. A lot of ppl assume my son is part of them but that zaidy was alive.

We've had this scenario many times over in the family, and no we do NOT name a name that a living grandparent has. Not if you're ashkenazi.

May have taken 15 years for grandparent to have a child named after them, but was never a consideration to use a name that another grandparent has. (15 years was not until granparent passed away. It was until a baby was born in a family where no grandparent had the same name.)
