If you name your kid Chaim Zanvil, you could also consider using a nickname of Shmuel, because Zanvil is a Yiddish variation on the Hebrew name Shmuel.

I know quite a few people whose "Hebrew" names are really Yiddish names, and instead go by their legal names which are the Hebrew equivalents.

But more practically speaking, if you really don't like Chaim Zanvil, talk it over with your husband and try to get him to agree to use your grandfather's name instead.

Give the name Chaim.
Right now it is the greatest gift you can do your husband.
Besides, Chaim itself is has a special identity as a classic Jewish name.
So much so, that a politician who did not especially like Jews called New York Haimytown.

You can do whatever u want and use any nickname you like. Just be prepared for people’s comments/judgements. Been on the receiving side of them but it’s still worth it for me to call my kids by nicknames I like 🤷‍♀️

Chaim is a beautiful short name. It means life! What can be nicer than that?

Personally, I don't mind the name Chaim and I think it is way nicer than most of its common nicknames. That being said, I keep thinking that Chachi ( pronounced tshatshi) is kind a sorta cute.

I’d guess yitzchak, since we call my son Yitzchaki and sometimes for short chaki.

One of my children is named after my father in law. I did not care for his name at all, but of course went along with using it. We use a nickname that I also did not like, but over time it really has grown on me and DS definitely fits the name! If you do choose to just go with it and call him Chaim, be'ezras Hashem you will grow to love the name and see how it really fits your son!
