5mg per lb is maintenance dose, you can technically go even higher.
Best to give it spread out over the day, not all at once.

I've been giving spread out over the day, different forms of magnesium. Morning, early afternoon, and before bed. Total is more than 5 mg/lb. My question is how much is too much?

Are you sure it's more than that in elemental magnesium? All oral forms of mag are bound to amother molecule, the dose listed can be for both of them together, not just the magnesium.
Either way, if the child seems to be tolerating it ok, no lose stools or increased agitation or emotional lability, I'd say it's fine.

Only one of the bottles lists elemental magnesium separately, so I guess you're right regarding the dose listed for both of them together. It's hard to get it right. I want to give enough that it makes a difference but not too much to be toxic. The serving size on the bottle is for an adult and since this is a small child, I was giving half the dose but then realized even that might too much. Hence my question here.

Hence my question here. | It's really really hard to overdose on magnesium. Honestly. So much of it doesn't even make it out of the gut.
The guidelines from the magnesium experts are different from what's on the bottle, but in general, doses on the bottle are intended for average adults at 160lb, so if you want to adjust it for a child you'd use a ratio to figure out your child's dose based on their weight.

Do you have a link where I can find guidelines from magnesium experts?
