Happened to me years ago! I never got it off 
I got a custom lucite insert tray made for it.

I have a 48 hour yurtzheit candle holder that I put my used matches into. When it fills up I throw them away and then start again.

Ner mitzvah sells a little tray to put the burning matches on. Also, get a lucite tray to put ontop of your regular tray

I used to have the lucite tray buy it got all marked up and wassi ugly!

Why are putting the directly on the tray? My tray is 8 years old and perfect still. I put matches in a tin muffin cup or foil.

If you haven't made a bracha you haven't taken in Shabbos and can wave the flame off just like you can light the candles.
or alternatively ask one of the kids to blow it out.
