I heard the reason being that if the mother cries from her babies pain it will cause a kitrug in shomayim

Good question. But even before and official vacht nacht, I believe the father and mother of the baby stayed up all night or took turns watching the baby to make sure no harm comes to the baby. That is ancient I believe…

I can be wrong but insane of having a suda . As shmira staying up all night. Special tefillos. I think came before pekalach and neighbor's kids dropping by. The baal shem attended sudos. I don't remember any story's about kods stopping by and going homw with pekalach.
Btw men say shema too....
