I’ve only worked for frum companies before. Transitioning now to a new job in a more professional, corporate company. What do I need to know? I know my emails should be worded more formally, and I shouldn’t discuss personal things.

For example, answering emails after hours. I never did this at my previous jobs, I was paid hourly so I put down firm boundaries that I would not work for free. However, now I will be paid a salary, so how often am I expected to check my email in the evening?

Any tips appreciated!

I work for a corporate company and don’t check my emails after hours even though I’m salaried. I think it’s job specific whether that would be required or not.

What other questions do you have?

In general, watch how other people in your role or similar comparable roles act and try to fit in, except of course insofar as halachic or hashkafic issues preclude you from doing so.

I'll bli neder try to post some more specific things later or after Shabbos. Would be helpful to know what range your income is in and whether you are an individual contributor or manager.

As an in-house attorney at a large corporation, it is expected that I answer and check emails after hours, and that I will sometimes work after hours, including significant amounts of work. People do not expect me to respond to non-time-sensitive issues after hours. But when timing matters, I am expected to be aware and respond.

Of course, Shabbos and yom tov are limitations on that. I communicate both the timing of these and the nature of the restrictions (totally out of pocket, no exceptions), clearly and regularly to those who need to know. I always specify in my out of office email response that I have no access to telephone or email, so anyone who emails me realizes this.
