Ok,
I feel better to hear that it's not my kids busting through the door "MOMMMMY IM HUNGRRRRRY." I get so rattled by the complaining every day and of course they start grabbing the snacks that are supposed to be for lunches or want chips which I can't stand them eating. When I offer fruit it usually is scoffed at. So what is your routine to get over this kvetchy hump.

String cheese and granola bars.
The granola bars are snacky enough that they are ok eating it.

But only 1 granola bars but unlimited string cheese. If they don't eat supper we'll because they filled up on cheese, I don't consider that so horrible.

That doesn't solve the kvetchiness. I've been trying to teach my kids since forever that my name doesn't change once they leave for school, I"M STARVING, WHAT'S FOR SUPPER is not my new identity nor does it suffice for a hello. I'm afraid there's no cure.

Put the healthy snacks on the table or counter so it’s the first thing they see when they walk through the door. Make the other snacks hard to get to (top of the pantry, basement) so they’re less inspired to get it. Or have dinner ready by then, if possible.

I know it’s hard for me to make good food choices when I’m hungry, I’m sure it’s the same for them.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve kind of accepted it as inevitable. Makes me crazy though and helps to know that it’s not just my kids.

You either need dinner ready, or let them eat chips or a different light snack. Not sure that fruit fills them up after a day at school.

Do they only have snacks in school? Or they have a hot school lunch?
If they only have snacks for a whole school day I get they are hangry.

My kids don't want dinner right when they come home. So I usually have snack/fruit prepped on the counter or table.

My kids eat lunch. But a sandwich and a fruit.
Breakfast before they leave.
A snack. At 10:30
Sandwich and fruit at 12:30.
Snack at 2.
A small snack on the bus
Walk in the door at 4:45.

They are HUNGRY.

Home made cake with milk and cut up veggies. Light proteins like eggs and tuna for the ones who come home later. If you know this is the routine every day be prepared.

My kids always came home starving, like hungry little monsters. No matter what they packed and ate at school..... As they ate their soup or whatever was for supper, they transformed into calm little people.

They are starving. I understand them.
This is not mentslich. As an adult I couldn't make a whole day on snacks and sandwiches.
I grew up with hot school lunches and was still starving when I came home.

My kids all get hot school lunches but they’re picky eaters and will only eat whatever they happen to like
