They are old enough to follow rules and eat at appropriate times. If they choose to break a rule they should expect to be penalized. Life is about making choices and taking responsibility for it. And clearly this generation of kids needs major help learning it. What type of irresponsible adults are we creating?

Where? This site is international. Never heard of such a thing.

I'm in NY mainstream BY type school. Don't know if it's new since this is my first year of high school. I don't think it was a thing when I was in high school 20+ years ago.

I think the point is to make kids accountable for attendance without taking it from class grades. Because they used to take points off per subject for chronic lateness and stuff, but then you don't get an accurate score if, for example, a kid is great at math and ends up with a B because they didn't do all the homework while they were coasting through tests with 90s. And you don't have an easy red flag if a kid is chronically late to many things.

The high school I went to recently started an achrayus grade.
My youngest sister is there now. She said it starts a bit higher than 100 and gets lowered with any unexcused lateness, absence or misbehavior. The issue I see with this is that there is no way to do “teshuva”. You mess up in ninth grade and when you apply to seminary they see a 82 achrayis grade which looks real bad. Just like you retake a test or ask for an extra project to raise your grade, there has to be a way to improve the grade.
I think they instituted this mark just for seminaries. It scares the girls and gives the seminary the info they need.
When I was there, we would get Sunday morning detention after a certain number of latenesses or absence. It was annoying and I hated getting it but once I sat detention, it was over. I think once you got a number of detentions, your grades would be decreased.

In my daughter's school, the grade starts at 102 to give a little leeway. This grade is used for unexcused absences and lateness, breaking dress code and other school rules etc...

Is a math grade shaming to a kid who's bad at math? Nobody but the school and parents need to see the grade. We can provide extra support to the kid who needs help to do well. But ignoring it isn't the answer. They'll need to show up and do their duties for actual life in a couple of years.

If they see an 82 for 9th grade achrayus and then it goes up in 10th and 11th, why would that look really bad? It would look like the girl worked to improve and is currently doing great.

In my daughter's school it resets every semester like any other grade.

Why shouldn't seminaries have an easy way to see whether their applicant is the type of kid to show up to class? It's very objective.

My daughter has a complain grade.
They start at 105 per semester.
Lateness, unexcused absences, uniform infractions, rule breaking all lose points.

A few times a year, they have a detention at 8:30 Sunday morning where you can come do work and get added points back.

As a mother I appreciate it. I was raised where our absences or latenesses took off points from our actual grade. I prefer that a good student can be acknowledging separately from behavior.

True- I just think there should be a way to improve it. If a girl takes achrayus for her grade and does something extra, she should be able to improve her grade.
Just like if you would approach a teacher and ask how you can improve your grade she may ask you to do an extra report or retake a quiz.

I think that non academic grading has great potential to boost kids' self esteem in many areas but this has to be done very cautiously.

Interesting that it's new to your school. About time they teach high school girls some achrayus.

Correct. It’s weaponized with the threat of seminaries seeing the grade and it’s a scare tactic for the girls.

Yes of course they can get hungry, but they should learn that a few minutes of hunger is ok and that they CAN handle it and they will be ok. “We can do hard things” “we can be uncomfortable” are all important life lessons. Especially with this kind of thing- they can learn to care for themselves so that they don’t experience that feeling again, if it’s that uncomfortable for them.

I think the only way to improve coming late is to stop coming late. Which is why the grade resets every semester.

I think one reason people are a little hysterical about this is that you're forgetting that the people implementing this are human. It's possible that some schools are overly harsh but in my kid's school they presented it as a huge deal to shake some fear into them but in practice they'll let you off with a warning for a first infraction (of something that makes sense to be a mistake. Obviously if you're coming to school with bright red nails against policy, the issue is not that you needed a warning), they're not docking points from a new freshman in the first week still trying to figure out how to get from one classroom to the next, they'll accept a parent's note if you're late after your sister's wedding. A teacher will give you the chance to make up a missing homework assignment and will only take it off your achrayus grade if you're actually delinquent about it. It's not that scary and I think it's a good way to get kids to take life a little seriously while also providing a fair measurement of behavior. Until this if a seminary wanted to know whether a kid is responsible, they'd ask a teacher and you run the risk that it's a teacher you didn't get along with.

Some schools are very harsh in the way they carry it through. When a seminary sees an 82 for example, it can mean completely different things depending on the independent school.

And I’m sure they ask what it means same way they do whatever other research they do.

Responsibility means eating at break times so they shouldn't be hungry during class. It's literally basic responsibility that's taught to first grade kids.

Yes, she should eat during breaks, but I guess none of you had schools that gave VERY VERY short breaks which girls spent on bathroom/switching classes/mincha etcetera. If you don't understand it, be grateful.

We all had regular school and figured out how to be responsible by the time we were in high school. It’s just silly to pretend it’s difficult.
