In which schools/city/country/community
is it a new thing? When I was in school 20-30 years ago, we were marked for responsibility. My girls have always been marked for responsibility.

I don't think it's new and I like it.
I think achrayus is more important than academic grades.

It will be a punished and a shaming technique for children struggling with organization.

I think it very much depends how the school uses it and what they put into it/what factors in. It's nice to have them motivated to be on time to school and class. Sometimes there are necessary exceptions and they get debitted anyway. I would also like to see things added to it, an "aseh" of achrayus, vs just taken away, "lo taaseh." So points off for being late, but added points for being a peer tutor, for example, or being the person who carries the books of the girl on crutches.

never heard it but don't think I'd be a fan. GPA should be grades. In general we aren't big fans of mandatory chessed programs... the "ironic" part is that my high schooler is happy to do chessed and when the school asked for someone to volunteer to help a family dealing with injury my daughter is the one to volunteer. we support chessed. just not the school mandating it.

I guess it depends on what they base the grade on. In my daughters' school, being disorganized wouldn't really affect the grade.

I work in a BY type HS in Brooklyn and they have a "performance" grade. The principal says it really works and helps girls who struggle academically to have that one grade they can do well on.
You lose points for cutting class, unexcused lateness, breaking school rules, etc. I don't think it's really much to do with "organizational" skills , as someone mentioned. Unless you blame being late on being unorganized...
As a teacher, I had a high 90s student who ate in class and when she saw her performance grade was lowered, she stopped!

does it start with a 100? my highschooler was complaining that behavior seems to start at like 90 and go down from there which doesn't seem to make sense since if the girls is a high 90s her grade is now being brought down for no reason?

is eating not allowed? I can concentrate better when I eat and as a kid got hungry often. remember we had a teacher who said we can eat or drink as long as it wasn't crunchy or make a sticky mess... I thought that was fair.

I am not the one who does the grades, but pretty sure it starts at 100. most girls get in the 90s. my daughter, who goes to a different school, says hers starts above 100. maybe 104? 105? so it gives some leeway.
and correct -- eating is not allowed during class. they have breaks for that. again, not my rule, but the schools. and it makes sense.

Why should a hungry student be penalized?

Many teachers don't allow eating in class because it become disruptive. Many schools do not allow eating in the classrooms at all, for sanitary reasons/bugs- water and closed drinks are fine. I agree that students should be able to eat, but can also see why it would not be allowed.

This is ridiculous, why does she expect to eat at all hours of the day? Even my little kids know that there isn’t always food available at every given moment. There are times for eating and times we don’t eat. And if you are hungry for 30 minutes, you will be ok and learn to eat more at official eating times.
And this is high school we’re talking about!!

As a high school teacher, eating and drinking never really bothered me as long as it wasn't noisy/disruptive.

If you got hungry often you weren’t eating the right foods. Give your kids real filling food and they won’t have to eat hourly like newborns.

Teens can get hungry at times. No need to penalize a student for eating something discreetly.
