Im just saying that it's not an unreasonable ask for your kid.
It's normal for him to want it and normal to try to work something out.
My 8 year old begged but I said no. I don't think it's normal for an 8 year old even though I'm sure some of his friends went
Unlike when he was 8 and 9, I didn't think it was a completely unreasonable ask.

Was just asking here for a reality check because I don't know norms.

I did tell him if he went to sleep early we'd try to wake him, and we did.

It's also location dependent for zmanim.
Here they started at 1:37 AM
My sixth grader (11 on English calendar but born after YK) really doesn't need to be up then.
I'm very grateful to his school for incorporating it into the day today and letting him sleep normally at night.

Sleep is so important for kids at this age to feel well and function properly. They obviously don’t realize that but we do and we have to enforce what would be best for our own children.
Some boys will do fine with 8 hours (or less) of broken up sleep.
Some will be tired and grumpy all day the next day.
Some might even get sick.
You have to know what’s right for your child.
The question wasn’t what to do about older- post bar mitzvah boys.
It was asked about younger boys who aren’t mechuyev yet to be there and probably only want to be there to be able to show off to their classmates that they went.
