Or, come to that, a child machzor? I assume we're not talking about the ones with a picture of a shofar, and another picture of apple and honey?

In the chassidish world, it's a full size leather-bound set, usually with Yiddish translation and some commentary, with the kallah's name engraved on each cover.

A "non leather" small machzor, or soft cover artscroll, or something with their maiden name on it( from when it was engraved years ago.) That's what I think 🤷♀️

I mean the smaller size colored (think pink and purple) sets we have in the house for the kids with their names engraved.

I never got a set either, but I wouldn't have wanted one, as I like using the machzor I used since I was a kid. It's familiar to me, and I enjoy davening from it.
No, it's not pink/purple, but I I would not have wanted a knew one either..
Future MILS - please ask the kallah what she would prefer.....

It's a total non- issue. I would never notice. If I did I would assume you like that one better or you lost yours or have never gotten a leather set. I'm chassidish

In my family, the aunts/uncles chip in to buy a set of machzorim for every Bar/Bas Mitzvah. They can choose, but generally they get the smaller blue Artscroll set, with their name on it.
It's a great set, lightweight and easy to use, and I would choose to use that over the heavy new leatherbound machzorim the Kallahs often receive. During the long Shemonah Esreh on RH and YK, a lightweight machzor is important to me.

Second marriage, so no parental gifts expected and no insulted feelings bH. We can't afford a set right now and I'm wondering how weird I'll feel in shul borrowing a kid's.
I'm also not sure what name we would've put on a kallah set if I'd gotten one. I guess that's part of what's making it a sensitive issue for me. |
Why not married name?
I never use mine, I use my artscroll I got for bas mitzva

I've never seen someone with a fancy siddur as opposed to one looking like the others at shul or noticed their name on it. Of course it could have been inside. If we're judged on that too I'm glad I'm home. G-d doesn't want that. Disheartened.

A friend once commented tell that you can tell to within about five years when a woman got married by the style of her machzor, until they reach a certain age, when lightweight and clear print become the priorities.

Yes to the first part, but as far as I've seen, even elderly women come to shul with their kallah machzor - and reading glasses.

Please don't be.
People don't judge others based on their machzor or sidur.
I was only wondering how unusual or noticeable I would be in shul.

What would you think if you saw a woman who did not have that and was using a regular or child's machzor Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur?
I'm most interested in responses from Chassidish women, but I'm curious to see cultural differences as well. |
I would think "חמול על מעשך"...
Seriously , I wouldnt think. I would be keeping my eyes on my own siddur and honestly not caring. The kuntz about davening is in the tefillah and not the color machzor or if a name is imprinted on it.
Whats a childs machzor? (pictures and scratch and sniff shofar pictures?)

Can you afford to buy yourself an Artscroll Rosh Hashanah/YK machzor(im)? If I would even notice or care what someone else uses and would notice a woman with an Artscroll machzor, I would assume she wanted to use one with an English translation so she could really focus on davening. And maybe a brand-new quality machzor wouldn't make you feel self-conscious.
Saying this as someone who does have a kallah set but will sometimes choose to use my Artscroll set on Rosh Hashanah/Yom Kippur so that I can better understand what I'm saying
https://www.amazon.com/dp/0899.....share (I bought this years ago on sale for $16. Maybe you can find it cheaper elsewhere.)

Wow. That first set is over $100 per volume. Maybe prices are different in Israel, but I've never spent even half of that on a machzor. I bought myself a new set last year, and they were about 150₪ for the pair.
OP, stick with a normal machzor. Buy a brown one if you think pink is too conspicuous. Give the difference to tzedakah. It's the davening inside that's important, not what it looks like on tbe outside.

I have a kalla maxhzor but I never thought twice about it. I would never even notice what type of machzor others have.
