Clueless cook here..
When you put meat in cholent (I think I have beef stew meat), do you just put it in raw with all other ingredients and cook together? Or are you meant to separately cook it first?
IF it makes a difference, my slow cooker is not the type with a base that you can put on the stove also, its an insert type.

I like to brown/sear it first with onions. But very often skip it.

Been making cholent for almost 30 years. Never cooked the meat first. And never saw my mom do that either and she's been making cholent for 50 years.

I do. I sear it first, then cook for some time, add potatoes, then put on Keep Warm.

Does it come out better that way?

I don't know lol I don't think I ever tried the raw way. I think I'm paranoid about it not coming out good if outting in a raw or water evaporating, so this way I'm sure it'll be cooked.
I also don't put in barley or beans, just potatoes, so don't know how those would behave.

I learned on here to put it in as is. No searing no cutting into pieces. It doesn't dry out this way.

I saute it with onions in the crock pot first and then add the rest of ingredients.
