Question (let me know if this should be a s/o):

Should I be getting my kids a new knapsack every year just for the sake of the specialness of back to school? (Even if their backpacks are fine).

If it's in good condition why buy a new one for a young kid?
When they are older they will want/demand it, now if they are happy (I suppose unless you didn't pay much for it or if you have spare money) why waste so much money on yearly paying so much if it's still in great condition.

If you do I'd be happy to send you my address, I'll take all your old good quality stylish bags for my kids...Wink

I firmly believe no, and that it's an issue of bal tashchis.
My kids get every few years, based on their needs (they need bigger, old one is broken, etc)
Many backpacks are fine being washed and air dried.

No. Get them fresh new supplies and they likely will need new shoes etc.
I purposely don’t buy my kids new things if they are not outgrown/worn out and the kid hasn’t asked. I do NOT want to introduce the middah of always needing more and never being content. I do want them to learn to be satisfied with what they have and know the difference between needs and wants.

The message trickles down, even with something like this.

Trust me, sometimes it’s hard for me Wink I like shopping for cute things for my kids. But in the long term they’ll be much better off having started out with the middah of being happy with what they have and not always feeling like they need something else.

And, my kids are bH very grateful and say thank you when I do get them things! I took my 10 yo shopping for nosh for a trip and he said “thank you so much mommy!”

Priceless!

I wouldn’t for younger grades if their previous one is in perfect condition.

Can anyone that’s good with shopping find me a cute backpack for a girl going to pre 1a. I don’t want it to big but big enough that can fit a folder. Don’t mind spending on a god quality one that will last.
Thank you!

Are you planning on passing it down to other children? Otherwise there's no point on getting something thay will last. They need a bigger size the next year anyway wait a few years to buy something that will last.

I love these but didn’t work for kids over 2 it’s tiny. Can’t fit projects and folders.

This is what they call "big kid" size (as opposed to little or mini)

I would get a medium or large at that age.
