The only concern is that the width is 8.25 and you want it to fit 8.5x11 without crunching.

Should I be getting my kids a new knapsack every year just for the sake of the specialness of back to school? (Even if their backpacks are fine).

I would, even if it’s not cheap. It’s something they use every single day. Probably in the older grades they would use for more than a year, but I find that in the younger grades it doesn’t last. You can tell if it’s being used for e second year.
