DD is 5 and is asking to take a shower herself . she has lots of beautiful thick hair and I want to make sure she fully cleans herself but at same time want to give her the independence she is asking for. what age is generally accepted for kids to shower themselves ?

I do a supervised shower at this age. Guide and assist until you see she mastered it well. Usually at 6-7.

I think 5 is a little young for making sure her hair is really clean. Id compromise she can do her body herself and you still help with the hair.

It’s not all or nothing. My 5 year old washes her body, plays, wets her hair and puts in shampoo while I fold laundry in the hallway outside, and then I go in and finish shampooing and rinse her hair and conditioner, brush, rinse.

thank you all! yes, have been doing supervised and a lot of helping ( getting soaked at same time) 😂 was just wondering if this was normal for this stage and when is “normal” to let her do alone. thank you!

My DD started showering alone at around 6 but I still do her hair (she's 7 now).

DD turned 7 today, she just started doing the showering herself but DH and I will be in the bathroom watching to make sure she is managing herself. Probably in a week she can do it herself without supervision.

I don’t remember what age my daughter stopped needing help with her hair, but she definitely still needed our help at age 7. That much I remember.
