This takes the cake though : I had a sister (she was nifteres when I was a baby ) whose name was Dina Hinka Beryl. They called her Dina, but I am very curious about the other names. I have a feeling that my parents didn't know anything about the origins of those names, their parents just asked them to use them, and they did.
I once knew someone named "Alteah (pronounced All-tee-ah) . Ahead was named after someone named Alter. |
Beryl is a common Yiddish name. It means "Bear."

I know of one Tzeitel |
I know these names from Fiddler on the Roof (Tzeitel was the oldest daughter, who married Mottel the tailor, and Hodel was the one who married Perchik, the revolutionary fellow), but I don't know anybody in real life with these names.

I had a relative by the name of Hodel. I still never figured out if it really comes from Hadassah, but I was told it's its own separate name.

We had a relative named udel (like puddle) and we’re told by an expert in gitten (and therefore names) that it was a nickname for haddasah in Poland)

Beider says Hodes is Hadassa. Finkel, like Judeo Italian Fiamma/Fiammetta, is a sparkle. Like wow. We should be proud of the women who raised us and of their names. Not say we have been told to europeanize so let's europeanize. Lesha is prob Lea. Henchen could easily be Hanna. One doesn't HAVE to use the name as long as one says thank you. and doesn't say yuck.
Paya Puah
Chasha isn't lettuce LOL it's Chasha, Chasya...
Gela is a blond
