In a poem assignment in 7th grade, I used the word gay as happy. The principal crossed off that word, and changed it to glad. I had no idea why and it didn't rhyme anymore.
We also read The Secret Garden in class that year, come to think of it.

One poster said she learned the word gay, from reading The Secret Garden, which I think she meant they used it in the book, as word for happy.

I think words like gay and sx are not a problem or embarrassing to use. They have two meanings
No?

In seminary one of the British girls shouted "does anyone have a rubber?"
Everyone laughed including the teacher. Then in her most American accent she said "I mean an eraser"

Yes for the word sx, which is the only word for sx, but no for gay, there are a lot of words that mean "happy" so it's a word we can do without.

Bonei Olam once had a photo on their auction catalog cover depicting a child sitting in a Little Tikes Cozy Coupe with a license plate saying, I BO.

IMO, it's a problem with the language that we don't have a good way to say that people literally slept together. Perhaps part of the reason casual just for sleep bed sharing is so taboo is because it's so difficult to talk about without creating implications.
