20 periods a week @ $52/period (high school afternoon job)...x 40 weeks = approx $41,000 a year. (Happens to be some of those hours are p3 so I don't get salary for all the hours so end up making less)
Also work a separate morning job, approx 10 hours a week, not on salary.

How long is each period? Do you get paid for days when there is no school?

38k is an anomaly. Most teachers in Lakewood don’t crack 30k.

Most schools gave nice raises for the upcoming year. Many teachers are now in that bracket. I'm not making close to that this year.

My, my, times have a-changed!
When I started teaching secular studies a little less than 15 years ago, I got $8000 for first year. Slowly increased, but by year 10 was still only about 18k. (Brooklyn)
Now in LW, limudei kodesh. This year got $26k, will increase to $31k next year iyH.
Want to point out that the OP's salary does seem to be an anomaly.
Also, that my friends who teach HS seem to be right- it's the way to go!
Also, that while I'm happy to be getting a nice raise, I totally agree that it should not be coming at the expense of the parents, most of whom are already strained as it is. Maybe this is a socialist-type thought, but I'm sure there are enough wealthy parents in each school/community who would be happy to support the cause. Personally, I would turn down the raise if that was a choice that would help the parents (BH many, many times that I am in a position to be able to say that).

Also, to be frank, I don't believe the extra few thou will make me (anyone?) a better teacher.
Also, teaching is extremely hard, yes, rewarding, but very hard work during official work hours. And the amount of "homework" and unrelenting pressure every evening is really huge. I know that many of the posters on the other thread seem to also bring work home, but I can't imagine it's this much. And let's not discuss report card/end of year/ midterm marking season...

If I would leave the field (which I am beginning to consider), it would be simply because I am having a harder and harder time being a good mother and homemaker while balancing teaching.

Thank you for listening to all my thoughts! (I probably broke many of the rules of how to reply in a given thread, but I just had so much to say! Smile

Who said it's rough? I don't feel overpaid. I work hard and have a lot of experience. In my second job, I built myself up and charge over 100 per hour - why don't you mock that?

I imagine you are yashar and being paid on the books.
How many hours of work are you able to generate at that price point that you still qualify for Medicaid and WIC?
The problem with those supplementary second jobs are they are typically very limited in the amount of work one can generate

Get free tuition thank You, Hashem.
Limudei Kodesh hours.
Next year will be paid about 38k.

I only get medicaid for my children and wic so not living the glamourous program life. I work super hard at a second job and live super simply. My husband is in kollel. If not for the raise, I would have had no choice but to leave teaching.

Dont forget that the free tuition is TAX FREE. I pay tuition with post tax dollars.
And it doesnt count towards getting benefits. WIC in these times is a lot of help. Milk, cereal, eggs... that would help us a lot!! Look at the grocery prices!!
Medicaid is also a lot of money. Free health coverage, no copays, no deductibles, no coinsurance?!? And prescriptions are free? That is worth a ton, depending on your family's health. But could be worth 10,000 or more a year!! Just an ER visit for a kid can be $1000 and that is after paying premiums...

We should be paying our teachers enough so they don’t need wic and offering health benefits so they don’t need Medicaid.
Why are you making it sound like she is saving.
If she was making a livable wage she wouldn’t need programs.

Wow, how can I get that job? I know so many who would beg for that job even though their current job description is "fancier"... for me it is less hours than I work a day but same salary and way more vacation!! And my job is super stressful...

The point is that teachers complain about their salary. But when you add in the perks for the hours worked she actually is making a decent amount despite the numbers given. If comparing apples to apples I end of worse off even though I technically make more. Firstly, I have a graduate degree but that means a student loan. Then my work doesnt pay anything for family health insurance but I dont qualify for any exchange because my work offers me a plan and I make too much for my state's Medicaid program. I also pay sky high taxes. I work way more hours a day, more hours a year, less vacation, unpaid YT if I run out of vacation days and none of the perks of programs or being a Morah. None of the YT help, appreciation events, Chasdei Lev, the "mandatory" gifts by parents...

And I dont make that much!!

Where I live, in Stamford Hill, UK, Sem leavers earn at a teaching job $8.50 an hour.
All the local schools made a pact not to pay more, so no one will have a reason to leave in order to get better paid elsewhere . This is exploitation to the highest degree.

The minimum rate for cleaning help (foreigners, who don't speak the language) is $11.30 +.

I work 9-4 (plus the at home time) and make 50k. Not bad except that's the top of the ladder for basically full time work. That was my husband's starting salary in his field with consistent raises
