Medicaid is also a lot of money. Free health coverage, no copays, no deductibles, no coinsurance?!? And prescriptions are free? That is worth a ton, depending on your family's health. But could be worth 10,000 or more a year!! Just an ER visit for a kid can be $1000 and that is after paying premiums... |
Not all schools give free tuition anymore though...
I get a 25% discount- would probably be eligible for just that much if not more based on my salary...

It's supply and demand. If there are not enough teachers schools need to pay more to recruit more people into teaching. If we get to the point where the salary is so good and there are enough teachers the salary will come down.
The thing with teaching is that it's a skill that only some people can do. If you want the talented teachers to stay in teaching you need to pay them enough to make it worthwhile. If you don't you'll just end up with poor quality teachers.
I worked ija public school not in the US and made about 60000 dollars a year. It wasn't enough to keep me teaching. The amount of lesson planning, marking and reporting is hours of work.

I work 10 minutes more than you in the department of education and make over 100,000 plus benefits and pension.
Would you consider switching?

I live in the Uk and I earn 13 pounds an hour, I also get free babysitting. this is my take home money. Here in the Uk its called a nice wage lol.

its pretty disgusting. I worked in stamford hill teaching and was paid £100 a week for half a day. Insanity. And the girls are forced to do these jobs because no one will want to marry them. 
And some of the schools are state funded so theoretically they should have more money to pay. How do Yesodei hatorah and Lubavitch get away with paying so little if they are state funded? Don't they have to follow guidelines? (When I taught in one of those schools there was no state funding)

What do you do in department of education? In which state are you located?
I teach a full day and make $52,000, I have a master's degree in education and 8 years experience in the classroom, plus 8 years experience of informal teaching. Hoping to get a raise this year, but would love to know what types of jobs are available in the department of education that pay so much more.

I'm not state certified, and I'm not at a place in my life right now where I can put in the time up to it. just a bachelor's and masters in Jewish education, which is more than enough for frum schools

I'm curious how many teachers just take what they're told the job will pay, and how many will negotiate.
If you have a decent amount of experience, are doing a good job, and might be difficult to replace, it's worth trying some negotiation.

Most people need two full time incomes for a liveable wage for a family. It's not realistic to pay the equivalent of two full time incomes to someone working part time and less than 10 months per year. Or even one full time income.

I made 25k my first year. 8-1. But that was with a masters and a few years assisting 8-4 @20k

I teach three elementary grades the following subjects: math, social studies, writing, vocab, and literature. I am at school every day for just under 5 hours, and actually teaching for 4 and a quarter of those hours. I spend at least two hours every single night grading and prepping (and I've been teaching for several decades, but I still prepare daily and weekly, because students change and times change and using the same worksheet every year really doesn't cut it). I spend at least 3-4 hours on weekends grading, prepping, and talking to parents. This does not count meeting time, when I am required to meet with my superior or with parents/special ed staff.
Summers I spend eight out of the ten weeks working on my subjects; I completely overhaul at least one subject a year and usually two. I make changes on all of them to reflect how they went in the past year. I usually spend a couple of hours each week in the summer communicating with other teachers or my superiors about plans for the coming year. I also create materials for other teachers in the school and its other branches, and this is part of my job description.
I have years and years of experience, and I believe that I am considered a good teacher.
OH! I also have a side job, no connection to the school at all, doing computer work from home for 20 hours a week. That's because my teaching job pays roughly $50,000 yearly, and I do not get free tuition or a tuition break. I get 7 days off a year, but no one wants to sub for me, which means if I don't go in, my students do nothing. Consequently, I take off as little time as possible. When my son got married, I took off a grand total of two days. I've gone into work after illnesses when I probably should have stayed in bed.
I've repeatedly asked for raises that would make it possible to give up my other job, but I've quite literally been laughed at. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it is physically and emotionally exhausting. So I am calling it quits and leaving after this year.
So here is my conclusion:
You can either pay relatively low, affordable tuition, OR you can have amazing experienced dedicated teachers that will give 100% to your children and make sure they reach every student in the room. Because there are a lot of options out there for women who are bright, talented, and can stand in front of a room and inspire learning, and they are no longer going to work their tails off for peanuts if they can do better.

So ppl who would like to make normal wages won’t teach.
We agree
The hours are shorter then typical jobs.
It’s only 10 months
They can’t earn a normal income for one person within those parameters.
They might as well get a diff job. Work slightly longer. Get paid normally.
Most ppl who would be amazing teachers just don’t want to work within those limitations.

Wow. I'm a speech therapist, so I have a master's degree that cost approx 50k in student loans (plus hundreds of dollars every year to maintain license, certification and insurance). I thought a degree meant that I would make more $....
I make 65 an hour. I work a lot more than 4 hours 15 minutes a day and do not make 65k (or even close to it) during a school year.
I'm not jealous and I'm glad teachers are making so much. But for the love of gd can we PLEASE stop all this fake rhetoric that teachers are underpaid!! Because now the schools are coming after all us poor struggling parents to pay more!! And there is only so much of a discount they are willing to give!!

I get approx 3/4 pay when no classes (regular teaching is salary, P3 is only per session done)

Approx $90,000, 30 periods a week, high school. I have my doctorate and this is my 12th year as a teacher. Modern Orthodox school in the tri-state area.

The problem with those supplementary second jobs are they are typically very limited in the amount of work one can generate |
Of course I'm yashar and get paid on the books!!! (Insulted at any insinuation) Only my children get medicaid which works in phases to a pretty high income with my number of children and children on medicaid get wic.
TBH I can't generate too much work because teaching takes everything and I mean everything out of me.

What are all these perks ppl speak of? All together 1,500 between chanuka and purim if I'm lucky - so now my salary is 40k. Teachers don't get chasdei lev. Every office gives bonuses and persk as well. Have you tried living these days? 40k is a joke.
