They were in the same condo as their father when the building collapsed.

Yes they fell from the 9th floor onto a balcony on the fifth floor (that didn’t collapse) like they got stuck there and their father/ husband kept falling…

Right now they are going very carefully as they are hoping to find survivors. And as frustrating as it is this is their best chance and method.

I read that it was lesser of a tragedy that it happened at this time of year because many people in the building didn't spend the summer in Florida and if it would have happened last year, the building was full of people fleeing the NY coronavirus restrictions. Many lives appear to have been lost but fewer than there could have been.

Hate being negative but not one person found since the morning?

Will this take several months?

I think a few were found? The death toll is at 9 Iirc, and only one of them passed away in the hospital (meaning, was rescued first)

Why the work is so painstaking. From the Los Angeles Times

Scores of rescue workers remained on the massive heap of rubble Sunday, searching for survivors but so far finding only bodies and human remains.

In a meeting with families Saturday evening, people moaned and wept as Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Raide Jadallah explained why he could not answer their repeated questions about how many victims they had found.

“It’s not necessarily that we’re finding victims, OK? We’re finding human remains,” Jadallah said, according to the video posted on Instagram.

He noted the pancake collapse of the 12-story building, which had crumbled into a rubble pile that could be measured in feet. Those conditions have frustrated crews looking for survivors, he said.

Every time crews find remains, they clean the area and remove the remains. They work with a rabbi to ensure any religious rituals are done properly, Jadallah said.

If crews find any “artifacts,” such as documents, pictures or money, they turn them over to police, officials said.

Alan Cominsky, chief of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department, said they are holding out hope of finding someone alive, but they must be slow and methodical.

“The debris field is scattered throughout, and it’s compact, extremely compact,” he said.

Debris must be stabilized and shored up as they go.

“If there is a void space, we want to make sure we’re given every possibility of a survivor. That’s why we can’t just go in and move things erratically, because that’s going to have the worst outcome possible,” he said.

In meetings with authorities, family members repeatedly pushed rescuers to do more. One asked why they could not surgically remove the largest pieces of cement with cranes, to try to uncover bigger voids where survivors might be found.

“There’s not giant pieces that we can easily surgically remove,” replied Maggie Castro, of the fire rescue agency.

“They’re not big pieces. Pieces are crumbled, and they’re being held together by the rebar that’s part of the construction. So if we try to lift that piece, even as carefully, those pieces that are crumbling can fall off the sides and disturb the pile,” Castro said.

She said they try to cut rebar in strategic places and remove large pieces, but that they have to remove them in a way that nothing will fall onto the pile.

“We are doing layer by layer,” Castro said. “It doesn’t stop. It’s all day. All night.”

Rescuers swept the mound with dogs trained to sniff out humans.

They also used a microwave radar device developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and the Department of Homeland Security that “sees” through up to 8 inches of solid concrete, according to Adrian Garulay, chief executive of Spec Ops Group, which sells them. The suitcase-sized device can detect human respiration and heartbeats and was being deployed Sunday by a seven-member search-and-rescue team from Mexico’s Jewish community.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said six to eight teams are actively searching the pile at any given time, with hundreds of team members on standby ready to rotate in. She said teams have worked around the clock since Thursday, and there was no lack of personnel.

Teams were also working with engineers and sonar to make sure the rescuers are safe.

Crews spent Saturday night digging a trench that stretches 125 feet long, 20 feet across and 40 feet deep, which, she said, allowed them to find more bodies and human remains.

Earl Tilton, who runs a search-and-rescue consulting firm in North Carolina, said rushing into the rubble without careful planning and execution would injure or kill rescuers and the people they are trying to save.

“I understand the families’ concerns on this. If it was my family member, I would want everyone in there pulling rubble away as fast as humanly possible,” Tilton said. “But moving the wrong piece of debris at the wrong time could cause it to fall on them and crush them

In the midst of all this tragedy really grateful that Desantis and the powers that be in Florida and Surfside have been so respectful and accommodating to the families/relatives/friends of those missing R"L and have let in at their requests IDF SAR crew, Hatzalah, Chabad, and others to take active roles in supporting, searching, and recovering respectfully and professionally.

Interesting question because I would have thought that links to Zaka, Hatzolah, Miskasim (sp?) and funds to accommodate rescue workers and visiting family members would have been posted all over the place. Is someone paying for all of it? For some families, multiple burial plots will be unfortunately needed. One deceased Jewish couple has been identified. Older people may have already purchased plots.

There is a chesed fund set up
I know FIMA is giving out funds
DH was out on the site yesterday
He says they are really doing a phenomenal job even though it’s taking a long time
He spoke to the chief rescue worker from Israel
The Israeli team said that the Miami team is doing exactly what they are suppose to do in this situation and their cautionary pace is what is needed

I've seen such pleas posted by Elan Kornblum from Great Kosher Restaurant Foodies, particularly appealing to restaurants in the area to provide kosher food to workers and families. And a chesed fund.

3. One more update of the day from the amazing community of South Florida and how they've come together to help others in this time of need.

This was the scene yesterday and last night from Soho to Surfside. A huge Yashar Koach to Soho Asian owner, Shlomi Ezra. We posted yesterday that he put out a request for people to drop off supplies to the relief effort and as you can see, much was collected.

They had a police escort to the Shul of Bal Harbour to unload the goods.

4. One of local restaurants was offering free Friday night meal there for everyone affected.

5.
More Support for Surfside

Thank you Bethenny Frankel (while I've never seen RHONY), she has this wonderful organization, #Bstrong that helps with relief in disaster areas.

She has a Costco-sized warehouse in Miami and it looks like a tremendous amount of supplies the organization is able to give.

Here she talks about the situation and how one can donate.

https://bethenny.com/bstrong

This is what she wrote:
@globalempowermentmission,
BStrong is distributing $500-$1000 each in cash cards directly to displaced residents in need from the tragic collapse of Champlain Towers in Surfside, Florida. We’re also supplying the Shul of Bal Harbour and other local community centers our BStrong Family Necessities Kits for the entire community affected.

The BStrong warehouse is in Miami and stocked with survival kits, lumber, medical, pet, baby supplies food, blankets and relief aid to support victims after this tragedy.

100% of your donation will go towards cash cards to be distributed directly to the victims and their families to give them the liberation and dignity that they need and deserve to rebuild.

We have been meeting with families and are on the ground working intimately, immediately and directly with city officials and victims.

6. A request (from restaurants, probably) for experienced cooks to work night shifts to cook for first responders.

I'm wondering if this rate means that this operation will be going on for months on end?

It will definitely take really long if they continue at this rate and find approx 1 day Sad
It seems like they’re doing the best possible and there’s just no way to go quicker. So awful!

If ch"v this continues, at the point where they don't think it's possible to find survivors, their action plans can change.
