I think it's believable that someone will not see what is happening because they don't want to see it, even if it is obvious, so they shut off their mind to it and so really believe their spouse is normal.

just to add, someone bought their house, for real estate purposes, and she said that walking through the house, there is most definitely a creepy feeling and bad energy. im sure theirs was not a nice, warm loving environment. but if she did live with this horrid monster for so many years, don't you think she absorbed some of that?
