you can make a spilt pea soup recipe and add chunks of meat ... real yum ...

and if you thicken it ... can ladle into mini cooked pie crusts ... FUN!!!

brown a peice of meat (chuck, flanken, steak whatever), sautee a spanish onion, put in large pot with one chopped up cabbage (careful chopping!), two of the large (I think 15 oz) cans hunts tomato sauce, brown sugar or splenda to taste (start with 1/2 cup), add water to almost top of pot.
bring to a simmer and cook about an hour, depending on how large the cabbage peices are

Ultimate (and simple) Cabbage Soup

2 14oz cans tomato juice
1 very large white cabbage shredded (or 2 bags shredded cabbage)
1 large onion chopped
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 marrow bones
1 tray pack boneless flanken cut into chunks
5 c. water
1 c. white wine

Put everything into the pot and mix. Bring to a boil and turn down to simmer for 3 hours covered.

No browning or sauteeing and this soup is just delicious. Everytime I serve it my guests ask for the recipe. It also freezes beautifully!

Bete'avon!!

This one is easy as pie and tastes great. Good for Shabbat.
My friend taught this one to me.
Sautee tons of onions.
Add meat. Brown.
Add some red wine, garlic, salt, pepper, I would add a bit of tomato paste, just enough to give it a bit of tomato flavor and a nice color.
Add water.
Just keep cooking.

Comes out really rich. With rice or noodles or matzah balls it is a meal in a bowl, and the next day you can have the meat with sauteded veggies; some carrots and cabbage and more onions, maybe some peppers for color. Just sautee them seperately, and allow the soup to cook down.

Again, over rice or couscous, yum.

White wine is not the same as white wine vinegar. It is used to make the vinegar, if you have white wine that is turning that would be vinegar. But the flavors are different.

I Have never actually made this soup, but just by looking at the recipe I think you could just add another cup of water instead of the wine.
