I dont want to give up my challah recipe, its so easy and the challah tastes so good- but I feel like I should be getting more challahs out of it. I use almost an entire five pound bag of flour and end up with only 5 large challahs with a bit left over for some tiny rolls.

is that normal?
anyone have a really good challah recipe for me?

sounds normal to me-- my moms recipe is the same amount for 5 lobs.

my recipe is 13-14 cups of flour and I get 6 large challahs.

what difference does it make what recipe you use? the 5 lb. bag of flour doesn't give you more or fewer challos based on the recipe, does it? Scratching Head

some recipes have a higher yeast to flour ratio, and will yeild more then others.

I always baked smaller ones, I think they baked better anyway.

gr, it might not be your recipe, it might be the amount of time you let the dough rise, or maybe it's the age of the flour or yeast or some such.

I used to make five Challahs. Once, my SIL asked me to make her smaller ones, so I made six - and they came out just as big! They probably had more room in the pan to rise. Since then I've been making six Challahs. Now I'm considering making seven.Smile

how did that happen? Scratching Head
you must have a bracha in your challah like Sara Imeinu. Wink
I bake challah on a sheet of tinfoil, not in pans, so they rise as much as they can.

I guess ill have to start buying 10 lb bags of flour just for challah. shock
